Hmmm....should I give them $20 for far too late fixes of a fundamentally broken system? No...I don't think I will. A pretty big chunk of this should have been released for free....I'ts pretty gross that they wrapped that stuff in a book that costs money.

Anyone up for a game of Lowlife instead?

As others are saying (indeed as most shadowrun players will say, or so it seems), I was not impressed with 6th ed. Not at all. The more time you gave it, the more you were really just giving it rope to hang itself with. In fact my group gave up on 6th ed, we went back to playing 3rd ed - which wiped the floor with 6e when you played them side by side.

Having given up on 6e once already, this book's only attraction is the lure that the section of 'optional rules' might alter 6e to the point that it's playable, possibly even enjoyable.

It's certainly not a cure all for 6e's ills, theres still fundamental issues with 6e, flaws at root level that just won't get cured with tweaks and the fixes are so deep that they'd really constitute a 7e. To name a few.... skill list (I can't be an ace gunner without being mcguyver? ffs!). Still issues with the entire major/minor action system. Still issues with the way AR/DV is an entirely separate sum to do for every action when the things being discussed...See more

Pretty much I would throw everything out on to the trash and make a 7e of Shadowrun and make it all base on d20. But with that everyone that followed Shadowrun goes you just killed the series since it wasn't d20 base until 7e with an all new set of how to play the Game and nothing from 1st to 6th count or can be played since everything Brand new. yep that will go over well 7e is worst then 6 edition. It'll be better to just make a New series out of Shadowrun which is d20 base and restart fresh. sorry can't wait for the reply tons of hate will follow this.

Wow, I gotta say, as someone who was not impressed with 6e, they did a good job with this one. If you have an issue with a rule, they probably have a fix in here, or at least you'll know the scale to apply if you riff on something they published. With 3 alternate character generation options, and multiple rules fixes, clarifications, and expansions, this is the book for the GM, as well as for the players to really go in depth with.

On the upside, you have all the options. On the downside, some assembly definitely required. Shadowrun is a kitched-sink game, and this deepens that sink by a lot, for good and bad. Still reading through it, but I found options I was looking for and hoping for, and more than just one for each issue.

Does it "solve the Armor problem"? Yes. In your choice of ways.
Does it "solve the Strength problem"? Yes. In your choice of ways.
Does it give you options to fiddle with how the Edge system works? Yes. In your choice of...See more

I am going to be the cynic here that indicates that it sounds like that CGL took all the things that should have been free errata and are now charging for them as rules variants in their newest attempt to squeeze all the money from the IP as possible. However, I am very jaded about this given it was SR6th that made me want to stop playing Shadowrun.

Disagree with @Michael's take. Errata and rules overhauls are two different beasts.

From reading this book, this falls into the latter. Just the 17 pages from Ways to Play will completely change the game experience. I suppose you could argue one way or the other on if one or more of the alternate rules in that section should just be added into the main book, but given that some 6e campaigns have been going on for a few years now, that would just be confusing to folks.

Not to mention that the other 190 pages give contacts, heat, rep, lifestyle, HMHVV, changelings, equipment packs, character creation, and GM advice. This is stuff that traditionally does not go into SR's CRB (sadly, that includes GM advice), so I see no reason why it should be free.

This seems more like pathfinder unchained take rather than an errata. Welcoming one that I looked forward to in this edition.

@Allegra V

They never should have released the Core Book in the state they did.

As far as the rules options go, sure, they are selling us several years of houserules consolidated and (presumably) vetted for compatibility. However, there's a lot more than that happening in the book. I feel your cynicism though. 4e was the last edition I played. That said, I could probably take what's in here and make SR6 work for me. I'd have to make a custom rule book, but it would be much easier with what's here.

'and (presumably) vetted'
un-huh, do you mean the way they vetted the core rules before releasing them? I'm not convinced that's happened since 4e

As in "many of the alternate rules have been used at a variety of tables, and thus (hopefully) proven to be usable and not to be disruptive and thus ok to include in the book". The contrast here being things like many of the new Qualities, which are totally imbalanced (and in some cases unplayable), which clearly were *not* tested before publishing.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
