Personally, I think this is the best version of Rokugan yet.

Pages 10 & 11 give guidelines on how to run an Asian-inspired game with a focus on reducing harm. It addresses the deeply problematic origins of many stereotypes, and pushes the game towards a more inclusive version of the setting. Rather than rely on the meme-fuel "Honor!" for everything, it uses more nuanced terms like "devotion", "accountability", and "faithful friendship". It removes poorly structured, Japanese-sounding gibberish from places names. It removes the names of real life deities from their fictional religion. It avoids presenting monolithic culture, and relies instead on diverse depictions of stories rooted in humanity. Legend of the Five Rings was written in the 1990's by a white, American audience for a white, American audience. It has been 30 years since then and gaming has changed substantially. It is good for Rokugan to reflect a more inclusive present and be less reliant on...See more

I will add one dislike onto this - the included adventure is probably one of the roughest introductions to Rokugan I have seen. I think the module they had at GenCon, "Festival of One Million Blossoms", would have been a much better introductory module to include.

Wow, even RPG.net is not amused by the changes and that's something.

As far as i can tell, that is not L5R anymore.
I was really looking forward to this. Now my D&D 5E hopes rest on Kamon (have a look on Kickstarter).

Not sure if I missed it, but how do Duelists gain focus points before learning a stance? They don't have a written entry for the "Focus Point" ability the way the Bushi does, unless I've missed something.

Okay, so it looks like the rules for Duelist Focus points are the same as the rules for the Bushi, per page 222, but this is something that needs to be added underneath the class features. In addition, I've noticed some other editorial issues with the Pilgrim, the Ritualist, and the helmet picture at the start of the equipment section. I'm holding off on writing a review for now, in hopes that the updated PDF will be released by weeks end.

Pod version ? waiting forever ???

Brian Z August 14, 2022 5:19 pm UTC
No need for a POD version at this time, as the printed book is available through hobby retailers, both online and brick-and-mortar. MSRP for about $50, but is often discounted down to about $40 currently at many retailers.

Honestly, I liked the Asian influenced names of the towns/cities as well as the Fortunes (and their names) which were cut out. Also disappointed in that there wasn't some sort of conversion or suggestions for monsters from the prior released 5e books (even if only SRD, I believe goblins are in those rules). Solid on the martial aspects, but need to reread through the magic part again a bit more to get the hang of it.

Bought this because we have a samurai player in our D&D group. I haven't played L5R and don't have the time or resources to go out and invest in their whole line, when I'm already heavily invested in D&D. In my opinion, this book is a fantastic resource for those of us who want to incorporate Asian culture into an ongoing D&D campaign without having to convert older sources or outside sources manually. The different clans are interesting and I'm particularly excited for the martial techniques so that our samurai player has something to do other than a plain weapon attack when all the other players are casting a variety of spells. My only wish is that they would have added some unique items such as named katanas, etc but there is only a generic weapon table with some system in place for upgrading (awakening).

As an Asian player, I appreciate that Edge studio was respectful of the Asian cultures it has drawn inspiration from, and I disagree with those who feel that a warning against seppuku...See more

It won't get you "Asian cultures" - it will get you pillowbook samurai culture. (Which is what John set out to do in L5R 1E)

Shinobi at 5th can use a bonus action to throw a weapon or use a ninja tool. So potentially they can have two attacks.

Pilgrims at 13th level can chain strikes & externalizations. So you could potentially do a ranged touch externalization and a unarmed attack.

An acolyte of togashi when making a attack action may make a additional unarmed strike as a bonus action.

Also, with the catastrophe tattoo once per day they may make a number of unarmed attacks equal to their proficiency bonus.

And at 18th level acolytes basically get action surge.

As the son of a suicide victim, I understand that self-harm and suicidal ideation are real concerns. Believe me: my personal history is such that I don’t need that lecture.

But I’m also a historian specialized in Meiji-era Japan, and I bristle at this game’s weird if well-intentioned attempt to erase ritual suicide from its portrayal of a caste (the samurai) whose very *existence* was predicated on a willingness to perform such bloody expiations on command.

I appreciate what EDGE are trying to do, and I am *certainly* not “anti-woke”; I deeply appreciate the other advice about sensitivity in the book. But stating emphatically that this fantasy samurai-centric Japan doesn’t include ritual suicide is rather like saying that the pirates in 7th Sea shouldn’t attack ships.

Look: I know these are fantasy versions of real places from history, not those places themselves. I suppose I just question whether you can remove such an essential historical element from samurai...See more

While I can understand the concern about the removal of the concept, I feel like if you have an experienced set of L5R players and want to include things that were removed, the game police aren't going to kick in your door to fine you for playing it wrong.

But I also think it's worth mentioning that "Rokugan is not Japan" has been a tagline dating back to 1st edition in GM Guidance, and I don't think this particular book is about Samurai Drama, its about Samurai adventure. As you stated, I think this was part of threading a tricky needle and making this game accessible to more people.

I feel the same way about the "lecture"... but I suspect it's in there to appease parents and critics, not to actually limit play.

L5R is Humancentric setting but here they allow (and encourage) you to play as Naga, Nezumi, Mazoku, Specter, Tengu or Yokai. That's like completely missing the whole point of L5R, turning it into another cookie-cutter fantasy action game. Why not replace races with Clans? It would make more sense. Overall it looks like a D&D reskin rather than faithful L5R conversion for 5e.

To be fair, "Legend of the Five Rings" appears nowhere on the cover of this book. It's not L5R, it's D&D in an adapted Rokugan setting.

Naga and Nezumi have been playable options since Rokugan 1E, and Naga were part of the first expansion to the CCG. They did expand the playable options, but there's also plenty of references to these things being usable in the CCG and being part of the plot of L5R. Pretty sure if I dig through my collection I can find mechanics options for playing as most of these nonhumans in prior L5R editions. Lore wise, as stated, Naga and Nezumi have been playable in multiple editions and were part of the story for a lengthy time, Hida Sukune returned as the Shadow Samurai post death to aid Toturi's Army, Doji Hoturi was married to a Kitsune spirit, Tengu were previously represented by Kenku and had a playable school in 4th edition supplements. None of this is new territory for the product, it's just more encouraged due to this game transitioning to more of an adventure style game instead of a social conflict one.

I’m enjoying this so far, but I’m struggling to understand how to use some of the new Areas of Effect (like sweep or slam) if used diagonally. Does anyone have any ideas on that front?

Just got a physical copy of the book and managed to play-test it a little. But I'm surprised at the number of mistakes in the book, most of them are small and can ignored at a glance, allowing me and my group to play a session using it and enjoy it, but we definitely need an errata. Because as it stands I have no idea when the Pilgrim class gets what between 2nd and 3rd level as their table says one thing and the feature description says another, or both in the case of externalizations.

Errata or updated PDF ASAP please.

On page 88, the Ritualist class table lists "Channeling" as a 3rd level class feature. However, I can't seem to find where the description of that class feature is. Is this a possible misprint?

I have a question concerning Resonating Strike.( pg 101) It seems that if the PC hits the npc, the npc gets no saving throw to the reoccurring damage.

That's how I read it. If it hits they suffer the damage for a number of rounds equal to the highest die result on your hit die. If they get hit by resonating strike again the number of rounds they take damage is extended by the highest hit die result.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
