From the Journal of the Legendary Ranger and his Pet Hamster

A century has passed since the Bhaalspawn fought over the legacy of their father — Bhaal, the Lord of Murder. Two heroes witnessed the epic struggle firsthand — the ranger Minsc and his faithful companion, Boo.

Minsc and Boo were able to track down old friends and hated enemies and find out what they’ve been up to over the past century. They’ve compiled everything into this journal, edited by the traveler extraordinaire, Volo Geddarm.

Included in this journal are four cities, including Athkatla and Baldur’s Gate; ten group patrons led by some of Minsc and Boo’s old friends; a dozen new monsters; six arch villains and eleven dastardly henchmen.

Is this material canonical?

I know this was taken down for a day or two. Does anyone know why, or if they updated the spellcaster stat blocks to use the new method of reducing spells and making some abilities?

We don't know why. The statblocks use the old system (spell slots for most spellcasting, at will/per day for innate spellcasting).

Would people mind posting pictures of the softcover and hardcover printings to see how they look? I’m debating getting the hardcover but want to see the difference first.

typo alert: it's "Lords' Alliance"...not "Lord's Alliance" DMG has the same problem in one spot (but not in another).

I am very excited about this and have bought the hard cover version. This is the sort of thing I like seeing from WoTC :) This doesn't appear to be a collection of cutting room scraps! Very excited about this.

Some good stuff for $15.00 but I have a few complaints. First, more than 1/2 the blocks are republished from an earlier document published on DMs Guild. Second, the art on the cover isn't even Boo. That's clearly a guinea pig and NOT a hamster, let alone a miniature giant space hamster.

Q: Why is there no ampersand on the cover - yet released by WotC?

Published by Wizards, but the team that created it are actually the ex-BioWare guys who designed the original 2 Baldur's Gate games, and now work for Wizards' video game division, rather than the WotC D&D team. Hence it is still branded as a DMs Guild release.

Anyone know why this was pulled from the store for a day or two? Also, I'm not sure if this is a related question, but are these updated with errata? If so, how does that typically happen?

IIRC, you typically get a notification that the file's been updated, and then you can download the new version free of charge.

So I want to order this in Hardcover print, but I am aware it currently has typos and missing items from stat blocks, etc. Should I wait for an update or will I miss out on the book? I'm unaware of the process and don't know how long it might take to see an edited update available for print?

So, due to how this book was produced, it's hard to tell if/when it'll be updated. However, print on demand means what it says - each copy is printed for each order. That means it can't "sell out". If you don't want a print copy with typos, I'd recommend just buying the PDF now to have the material, and then if/when the update comes, order the hardcover then.

Can someone please explain to me why the characters in the book are so different to the ones in the games? It's like I've bought an AU book for my birthday and I am very confused by it all.

Doesn't really work as an excuse when they change their backstory during and before the games. Like making Imoen part vampire, making Kagain always this bloodthirsty character, and saying Kivan slaughtered villages with Faldorn because of his wife's death.

Kagain was the standout weird character for me. I was wondering if they’d somehow confused him with Korgan Bloodaxe from BG2 who fits that description much better IMO

Go for eyes Boo! *squeak* Has anyone ordered PoD for international shipping and do options come with a tracking number?

I didnt get a tracking # for my order, but I ordered return of the lazy dungeon master on 09/27 and it arrived yesterday, fit into a mailbox and I suppose that this one will too.

Email DMsGuild support. If that doesn’t work, I think it’s irreversible :(

I have never purchased print on demand, so I am nervous about getting the hardcover. Has anyone done this before? How long does it take and how do they ship it? Thanks.

Both soft and hardcovers are good. In addition DriveThrug is good about getting you a replacement if there is a mistake in the printing process. Usually takes a few weeks with printing and shipping.

I have a few of the hardcovers (Exploring Eberron, The Border Kingdoms, and a couple of others) and the shipping has always been fine. I'd argue the POD provider does a far better job shipping these books than Amazon or Barnes & Noble do.

There is a typo on page 50: bottom of the page, "Eat the apply and spit out the seeds with an action." Should be "Eat the apple..."

Not if you pronounce "apple" with a "y" at the end. ;)

There’s quite a few typos in here it seems. Hopefully an updated version will be provided. It has enough typos that a letter to the editor from someone else working on the product was left in still!

Blech. If you are coming to this as a fan of the Baldur's Gate games and the storyline you helped create there, these are not the characters you know and love, and may actively tarnish your memories of them. The city stuff is useful enough, if you want to use them as tools in your game.

Yeah I saw the entry for Imoen and I'm really confused. She's suppose to be a an Archmage with rogue stuff but instead she's a rogue who is a sort-of vampire now? What?
I'm assuming it's something from the novels. If so, I still don't understand why they keep pushing those as canon when everyone hates them. The games are the part people liked.

The book's lore is current for 5E's time period, the 1490s DR. It's probably meant to be concurrent with BG3 in time. That means over a century has passed since BG2. Many of these characters have not, in fact, appeared in the interim (except Minsc & Boo, who've been headlining a comic since 2014).

However, this book was written entirely by the ex-BioWare guys who created BG1 and 2. The lead designer on this is James Ohlen. Drew Karpshyn is an editor, etc etc.

Right but lots of the things it describes are not what is consistent with what happens in the games. Like Imoen not having Bhaalspawn powers (even though she gets them in Throne of Bhaal) and Kivan being this horrible person who partnered up with Faldorn to raid villages out of anger over his wifes death.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
