Becks World, tall timber and terrible beasts

“If you ever see a reaper in the wild make sure you get a good look at it, it will be the last thing you ever see.”

Unknown logging contractor

Beck’s World has a population of 72,000 sophonts, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. This world contains an archaeological site with artifacts suspected to be from the now-vanished Ancients. This world is designated an Amber Zone due to its dangerous lifeforms. This a low technology world with technology competency below the standard for Charted Space. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Regina Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Domain of Deneb. Beck’s World, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world.

Ancient Site

The University of Regina has excavated many kilometres of tunnels in what was a major Ancient facility. There have been several attempts to break into the site, but it is now guarded by a large corporate security team.

Pine

The major export is pine. Large plantations are dotted across the world and are harvested and replanted on an industrial scale. There are also plantations of spruce, black butt and kauri making Becks World an important producer in the luxury timber trade.

Lake Coultard Mine

Industrial and gem quality diamonds are the reason for a mine so far into the lava fields and close to the southern pole. It is remote and desolate with a rotating crew of around three hundred. Diamonds from here are lifted from the surface by dedicated and well-armed merchant ships directly from the mine site.

Lava Plains

Alarge percentage of Becks World is plains of cooled lava, desolate and treacherous these also have deposits of extremely rare gemstones. A few hardy prospectors work in this tough environment, some have struck it rich with big hauls. There is an active market in Becks Town for rare gems with traders and jewellers coming from across the sector for the yearly auction.

Central Range

The Central Range is a massive range of mountains that runs east to west with a branch pushing down to the south. It is covered in forest and grasslands and is home to a variety of complex ecosystems, most of which have apex predators that are particularly aggressive. Although humans cannot digest local flora and funa without significant processing the local predators will attack humans.

Becks Town

The town was mainly setup for the lumber and gem industry and is situated behind a protective barrier designed to keep the local wildlife at bay. The areas around the town have been setup with hydroponic facilities to grow enough food for the 35,000 inhabitants. Becks World cannot grow human plants due to the nature of its soils and the aggressive parasites that live in them.

Protective Clothing

Humans operating in the forests and plains are advised to wear protective suits to keep the local bugs and parasites at bay, most are not poisonous to humans however they do bite and exist in large numbers at certain times of the year. All houses, vehicles and town spaces are well protected, but wilderness operation is hazardous.

Bigger Wildlife

There are many big predators on Becks World, the most fearsome example is Vincents Reaper, an eight-legged carnivore that stands up to three meters tall and looks like a cross between a bear and a lizard. Reapers have been known to team up to take down large prey or attack groups of humans. There is a reasonable business running hunting safaris that go after Reapers and a couple of other nasty creatures that live in the forests of Beck World.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
