“When the world needed a leader they found me and I answered the call, now let the people take their rightful place as masters of their own destiny and beneficiaries of their labours”

Curtain Hamsteap- President of Rethe, from his inaugural address.

Terrain

Rethe is a planet crisscrossed with deep canyons interspersed with dust seas and rugged plateaus. At some point the planet was wracked by geologic turmoil leading to the gigantic canyon systems, the largest which run for thousands of kilometres. Massive dust storms appear at certain times of the year making travel on the surface treacherous and at times cutting off orbital travel as well. Terrain on Rethe can be loosly divided into canyon, dust sea, plateau, dune and pillar.

Canyons

Canyons on Rethe were formed by tectonic activity and some liquid flow in the distant past. This has left canyons that run for thousands of kilometres and are up to a kilometre in depth as well. The Retheians built their habitats by roofing the canyon floors which were for the most part smooth and relatively wide. The canyon floors also act as the highways byways with travel by pressurised all terrain vehicles and the planets monorail system. During the planets seasonal storm season, travel is confined to the canyon floors.

Pillar

The Pillar regions are massive forests of stone monoliths that rise out of the dunes at certain parts of the planet. The pillars can stretch up to four hundred meters high and form their own distinct ecosystem. Travelling amongst the pillars is difficult but not impossible and the regions have become tourist attractions of sorts, there are even some permanent settlements although these are mainly religious cults and alternative life-stylers.

Dust Sea

The dust seas are deep deposits of fine dust that can almost act as a liquid at times, there are waves and storms like any sea but it is made up of dust. The giant seasonal storms lift vast clouds of dust from the oceans and move it around the planet so seas change size and shape often. the density of the material in the seas is enough to float boat like vehicles and some explorers have sailed across these oceans however there have been sightings and rumours of large life forms living in the dust.

Plateau

The plateaus are high enough for the atmosphere to be virtually nonexistent. They are relatively flat terrain and can be traversed with care, avoiding the many crevasses that dot their surface. It is on the central plateau that a large community Llellewyloly have settled. These creatures thrive in the low gravity and almost non-existent atmosphere, humans however, very rarely travel through the plateaus and they are virtually unknown.

Dune

There are several large areas of dune sea with tall rolling dunes and like the plateaus these are seldom visited except for the occasional prospector looking for rare mineral deposits which can be accessed in the bowls between dunes. There have been artefacts turn up indicating that there was a prehuman civilisation on Rethe possibly millions of years ago.

Climate

The atmosphere on Rethe is extremely thin and unbreathable for humans without aid any operations outside of the habitats need to be done using a light heated air tight suit and helmet. Most Rethians use a scrubber rebreather system with a double air tank giving around twenty-four hours of operation depending on how active they are. The daytime temperature in summertime at the equator can get as high as 19 degrees Celsius but it drops off quickly as you move north or south and at nighttime it can drop fifty degrees, depending on the suit model it can be difficult to survive the night in the open.

The massive storms are a feature of the summer months as the thin atmosphere starts to warm up. These can severely disrupt operations on the surface and product huge clouds of dust interspersed with lightning and high winds that can propel sand and small rocks at high speed, literally sandblasting unprotected people and vehicles. Below the surface, in the canyons it is pretty much business as usual with the occasional dust fall from above and diminished natural light but for the locals it is all part of life on Rethe. Locals are rarely caught on the surface in these storms and they have enough orbital monitoring to them adequate warning but on the rare occasion that they are trapped in a storm taking cover below ground is essential, if not then staking out vehicles and structures using emergency storm kits is the next best thing. Most vehicles and habitats on Rethe are hardened to take being exposed to a storm but its generally best not to be out and about in one of the sand blasting monsters.

The Llellewyloly

Biology (Physical Sophontology)

“Llellewyloly (pronounced “Chlay-chlew-i-lolly”) have five multi-jointed limbs which function as hands and feet interchangeably. Their main sensory organs are also located on the limbs. The spherical central body is covered with long, coarse hair. Many body features are adaptations to the extreme temperature variations of Junidy’s day. Respiration occurs across the entire spherical body surface and is adapted to Junidy’s very thin atmosphere. Consequently, Llellewyloly venture unprotected only into similar very thin atmospheres; in other environments, and even then they require whole-body protective suits. “Dandies” (or “Dandelions”) as they are colloquially known, have a great phobia of non-native environments meaning that Dandies stick to low gravity, low pressure environments with similar atmospheres as Junidy.” Taken from the Traveller Wikki.

Why there is a large population living on the central plateau is a mystery to the humans on Rethe but according to the Dandies they have been there far longer than humans. At last estimate there are around a million living in villages scattered about the plateau in some of the larger sinkholes, building their circular habitats attached to the walls. They have vertical farms which grow their native foods up the walls of sinkholes tending them by ladders and drones. The Rethe Dandies have a tech level of around ten but are especially good at advanced material manufacture especially light composites designed for airships and vehicles operating in thin atmospheres. Trade with the local humans is centred around this, nearly all human habitats are covered by Dandie composites. Excellent examples of use of Dandie composites can be found in the two massive bridges on the monorail line.

Trading with the Dandies is a process of frustration as their social structure is complex and realtionships with one company may effect business with another also a Dandie who seems to be in charge in one situation may not be in another. The Retheians have very experianced intermediaries from both races who manage trade relations but there is the occasional trade war between Dandie companies that can mean supply is disrupted. Dandies have a dictatorial system of government but it is a very lose one. The clan or family is paramount with only things like infrastructure, health and defence being managed by the government, as far as anyone can tell the average Dandie has no interest in national politics but is mostly consumed with the ins and outs of the larger family group.

Count Darias Haut Kisley and the Revolution

The Kisley family arrived on Rethe over three hundred years ago as part of the original settlement effort focussed on building the Lithium mines. Through years of hard work and hard graft the family rose up to be one of the eight powerful families that controlled most aspects of life on Rethe. After incorporating the mining industry and taking a chairmans seat on the new board along with the other family heads, the current Counts great grandfather consolidated power by being awarded a Countship by the Duke of Regina. Imperial recognition gave the Kisley family mandate to develop the planet and the demand for Rethe’s minerals grew as did its population.

The miners by this time had begun to organise and had formed the Retheian Workers Party (RWP) along classic socialist lines, they quickly began to agitate for better conditions and a share of the mining profits. By the time Darius Haut Kinsleys father, Morellon came to power the RWP was beginning a campaign of rolling strikes which predictably ended up with the Retheian Constabulary breaking picket lines with armoured vehicles. The RWP put the call out to off world mercenaries and the training of the Retheian Workers Army began.

Their first operations were targeted at Constabulary facilities and designed to gather equipment and supplies for the wider struggle. The mercenary cadre was instrumental in planning and training the first units of the new fighting force and within three months had begun operations against the security forces in the major towns. The RWA had the support of a large percentage of the populace and led by the charismatic Curtain Hamsteap they took several towns quickly, declaring them part of the Retheian Peoples Collective. It was at this time that several large shipments of arms from Nebelthorne, a like minded country on Ruie, arrived giving the RWA a firepower edge over the Constabulary.

The insurgency came to an abrupt halt as the RWA rolled into the capital and the Imperial Navy landed at the starport. The imperials weren’t particularly interested in the politics of the situation, having been called in by Morellon Haut Kinsley they were there to open up the mines and ensure the flow of minerals off planet, the RWA having captured the cargo mass driver some months earlier. It was at this time Darius Haut Kinsley reported that his father had been found dead in his quarters with a self inflicted gunshot to the head, shortly after Darius declared he was appointing Hamsteap as interim President of Rethe and nationalising the mining corporation for the benefit of all Rethians. The Imperial Commander was then tasked by the new Count to disarm the Constabulary and supervise the transition to civilian government.

The Workers Paradise

After two hundred years of corporate control the Retheian Workers Army (RWA) took over the planet in a four month civil war that cost the lives of around eight thousand people. In the end Count Darias Haut Kisley called on the Imperial Navy to intervene and a short but effective campaign put a halt to the fighting. Much to the surprise of the corporates Haut Kisley threw his hat in with the RWA and the Retheian Peoples Collective was born.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
