Defiant RPG is an urban fantasy game about the mighty, modern-day supernaturals, who rebelled against their destiny and, instead of destroying the world, decided to protect it. By enforcing a demanding set of rules, the Defiant aristocracy empowers protective seals around their cities, making them the only safe-havens in a world ravaged by the Apocalypse.

The Player Characters are the Defiant blue-bloods, leading the supernatural society of fallen angels, demons, ancient gods, and dragons. They are powerful rulers, with their own Holdings (like clubs or luxurious mansions) and faithful subjects.

Defiant Royals

The rulebook contains:

  • Complete game rules that will let you play exciting games in the world of Defiant
  • A comprehensive description of the intriguing Defiant universe
  • Two robust chapters for the Game Master, focusing on preparing and running the game, with Basic and Advanced rules to choose from
  • Ready-to-play Province with dozens of NPCs, locations and two Story Arcs
  • 4 Origins available to play: Angels, Deava, Infernals, and Leviathans
  • 20 Personal Themes for the Characters, with dozens of Traits to choose from, Theme Questions the Players can ask during the game and special powers
  • 9 Marital Themes with the rules on how to navigate the chosen marriage
  • 9 Court Themes with multiple subjects to govern and problems to deal with
  • 12 Great Houses the Characters may come from, with their own Creeds and Sacred Traditions
  • 6 Holding Themes, enabling you to choose and customize your Character’s home

Defiant Infernal

Game rules highlights:

  • There’s no simple “You succeeded” or “You failed” outcome. There’s always a choice, an obstacle, or some trouble involved, but also bonuses, unexpected benefits, and lucky turns of events.
  • Players can influence the story by using different Theme Questions, tailored to playing their chosen Themes. The “Gem” Character can ask, “How am I the center of this event?” or the Guide can ask, “Who approaches me about my teachings?”.
  • Instead of Skills or Attributes, the Characters have descriptive Traits the Players can use creatively. The Traits may sound like “Athletic body,” “Thrives during tournaments,” “Knows how to charm,” “Acclaimed style.”

Fascinating! Just one question before I put it on my List Of Things To Buy This Month: How easy is it to modify the setting? Say I wanted to... rule out fallen angels and replace them with werewolves? Or even a supernatural being of my own design? Is that a feasible thing, or would it require a great deal of work?

It's kind of a tricky question. Inserting some elements into the game lore shouldn't be much of a problem. Since the Daeva are connected to animals, a "werewolf Daeva House" would blend right in. We tried to create a detailed, intricate world, however. And this means that replecing a whole Origin with another (i.e., Angels with Werewolves) would require some work - mainly with the fluff, rather than the rules.

To sum it up, I'd say it's way easier to add new elements to Defiant, than replace those already present.

Hey, this is somewhat unrelated to the product itself. But I think this is selling itself short. Literally.
I think at least 25$ or more would be appropriate. We have to start paying fairly for the work of creators.

An alternative: The option to pay more voluntarily, maybe even after the purchase.

Thank you, we do appreciate the idea of fair pay for ttrpg creators. When calculating the price of the rulebook, we took into account that this is our first major english title, which means, we ask our clients to put some faith in us as designers. Additionaly, since the book is in A5 format, and we used a large font, the 600 pages do not reflect its actual volume. It would be about 300 pages long in standard, full sized, two-column format.

Rather than paying more for the product, we'd really appreciate if you could spread the word about Defiant - there's only so many people we can reach on our own, and every review, opinion, or a social media shoutout really means a lot.

Man, would love to play this. Is there anyway I can get in touch with the creator of this game and have him/her run me through a scenario and record it for my Youtube channel? If so please let me know.

The rule book mentions a Character Creation Guide. I don't see one in my files for download. Is it missing?

After reading the text above and checking the page count on the right tab It got me intrigued enough to check the preview... which obliterated any and all interest in the title due to a most annoying trend that began infecting the hobby, and easily explains the 604 pages long... The mono column of text style layout, to which, in most cases, a large font is added, is not only very annoying and makes it very unappealing to read, but also allows the "bloating" if the book. I wonder how many pages would this title have with a "normal" layout?

Hi,

We created the rulebook with computer and smartphone screens in mind. Reading a two-column text can be tough on smaller screens. With around 142 000 words, the rulebook would probably have around 300 pages in a large, A4, two-column version, with a smaller font. It was never our intention to mislead anyone, hence the preview of the whole first chapter. I believe that the price of the game reflects the volume of the book. I hope you see it our way as well. :-)

I just want to sort of second what Marcin mentioned. I've recently been trying to move my collection to being entirely digital (I've still got a ton of books I'm trying to unload) as most cheap tablets these days are finally at the point where .pdfs load perfectly fine. In a printed product this layout would bother me, as someone who's reading this digitally it's fantastic.

Actually I also read a lot in my Iphone (so not even in a tablet) and I must say I find text in two or three columns much easier to read. Double tapping zooms in on the column chosen which in a double or triple column layout means the text shows up bigger and in it's entirety, whereas in a mono column, with greater width, most of the time to have a font size clear enough to read means I have to keep scrolling right and left because there isn't enough room to see the whole text.

So no, I just can't see the benefits of having such a layout... quite the opposite.

The one-column layout looks great on a 7-inch tablet and it's refreshing to not have to zoom and pinch through a 2-3 column layout for once.

Hey fwiw I'm incredibly impressed even before opening the book due to the huge array of custom sheets and assistance tools you provided.

About the only issue is that the character sheets aren't form-fillable. Which would be a huge boon to online play during lockdown.

Thanks for the sugestion. :-) We're working on a major online support system for the game, along with cloud-stored Character sheets, but it's a work in progress, and it's hard to say, how much time it will take to complete.

That's definitely impressive and valuable (especially in a tag based system) but just having stuff be form-fillable would be a quick band aid to help.

I will second what Stacie W is saying; is there any chance of a physical book at some point in the future?
I am quite intrigued by this, but I have to have physical books. I don't read PDFs or run games from PDFs, it's gotta by dead-tree version for me.
Also, is there anywhere where I could download a character sheet? I went to the Game Machinery website but can't find it there.

Unfortunately, we are focusing on the electronic version right now. With the way it has been edited, this rulebook would not look good in a printed format. I understand you do not like to read RPGs on the computer, or on the phone (I felt the same for many years), but if I may suggest - do give this one a try. This is not an "electronic version of the printed product" book, it was made specifically to be read on computers and smartphones. :-)

When making the game, we focused on the electronic format. The whole rulebook is designed in such a way, it's easy to read in on a computer screen or smartphone. At this point, we're not planning on making a physical book - perhaps we will try to make one in the future, but as of this moment, there are no such plans. We're focusing on creating more content (new supplements, etc.), and reaching new players with our game. :-)

This is very disappointing. Lost sales too. Not doing any kind of print version of it automatically puts it in a non-sale for me. I don't play games from pdfs alone.

That's utterly disappointing to hear, not even a PoD version for the fans to have. Honestly that stops me from wanting to purchase the material further. When I enjoy a product, I then want it in print format, to be able to use easier. Oh well.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
