This is the standard edition cover for the book by James Hanson.  You can find the Special Edition cover by James V West here.

Barbarians of the Ruined Earth is a weird post-apocalyptic fantasy setting inspired by Thundarr the Barbarian. Throw in a healthy heap of Mad Max: Fury Road and a little Pirates of Dark Water and you’ve got yourself a Saturday Morning Cartoon Stew fueled by heavy metal!

The players take on the role of heroes (or maybe some feisty brigands or profiteers), wandering the Ruined Earth defeating evil Sorcerers, beating the crap out of mutated frog-men, bashing some raider skulls, or wandering through the stinking ruins of an Ancient Earth space shuttle hanger looking for bits of Stupendous Science!

Blurb From the Back Cover:

What can I say about Barbarians of the Ruined Earth that the tasty 89 full color illustrations packed into this goddamned book doesn’t already scream at you? I mean aside from the fact it uses The Black Hack, has 4 classes and 4 races (each with cool abilities, starting gear, and tables to generate unique trinkets and life events), 7 sample traps, new magic system with 30 spells, new and fun equipment for the setting, including 12 weaponized animals, hireling and vehicle rules, 14 pieces of Stupendous Science, 60 different mutations, 18 pieces of cyberware, 11 charts and tables for GM’s to use on the fly, 46 adversaries to pit your players against, a point crawl in the ruins of the Los Angeles area with 13 locations, all channeling the spirt of Thundarr the Barbarian, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Pirates of Dark Water and it’s wrapped up in a 162 page sexy package… what else is there?! Not much, I’m afraid…

Can someone who has played both advise how this compares to Barbarians of Lemuria? It is one of my rules-light systems of choice and the setting gives me a light post-apocalyptic vibe, so I am quite curious how Barbarians of the Ruined Earth matches up.

Heyyo- author here :).

Mechanically they are different with Black Hack being much more D&D-based. Both are very rules-lite though.

Lemuria emulates Conan the Barbarian and that genre very well. Ruined Earth emulates the weird zany gonzo action of Sorcery and Science and colorful cartoons. The charts, tables, and classes all lend themselves well to capturing that feel.

Because I'm a publisher on DTRPG I can't leave an actual review, so I'm going to say it here. This game is a gonzo trip into a far future that looks like it was designed by Franz Kafka, H.P. Lovecraft, and Albert Camus while they were all on a bad acid trip with screaming heavy metal playing the entire time. At its core, it is a love letter to Thundarr, Mad Max, and other gonzo post apocalyptic sources, but it goes beyond that and finds its own voice, or voices. Those voices are the howls of barbarians, the electronic vibrato of ancient-but-still-functional robots, the bellows of beastmen, and the roars of creatures that don't exist in any sane universe.

Combine all of that with super science, weird sorcery, mutated creatures, ancient machines somehow still running after all this time, and other weirdness that defies logical explanation and you've got a game setting that flexes like Arnold when he was Mr. Universe. Check logic, historical accuracy, and any sense of reality at the door, because you...See more

I love this. If you plan to ever update, just one tiny mistake; on page 70 "Belt of Super Strength" reprints the text below it instead ("Scepter of Flame") of info for the belt. Just a nitpick, exceptional product all around. "Ariel, Ookla to battle!"

Sorry if you've already answered this. Any plans for a hardcover print? Read and reread the pdf. Dig the game so now I want to get a print copy. Willing to wait if there's a hardcover version coming down the road.

Added to my wishlist! Birthday's coming soon. :)
I've been looking out for this for some time now. TBH 1e is one of my favorite systems. And The Starrunner Kit Black Hole Edition is awesome!

This guy is trying WAY too hard to make edgy RPGs. Just comes out cringy. *fart sound* Plus, no one plays Black Hack anymore.

You want to know what is cringe? Coming to whine about a game book you never bought, never played and then talk about being edgy....

Thanks for the laugh though.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
