Spaceships and Starwyrms: Core Sourcebook

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

A wiry Human woman guns the throttle of a contraband military vessel while navigating through an asteroid field. Her copilot, a round, squat creature with one eye on a long stalk, gleefully fires the ship’s plasma cannon at the pursuing bounty hunters. A gnarled hunk of meteorite lays in the hold. It pulses with the ultraviolet glow of dark matter magic. A vaguely humanoid android snaps a jeweler’s monocle into place on their optical sensor to get a closer look as a feline man takes a wrench to the smoking engine room.

This vignette is a glimpse into one of many space adventures that you can bring to your table with Spaceships and Starwyrms. S&S is a comprehensive 5th edition supplement that gives you nearly 400 pages of science fiction flavor and rules to transform your 5e experience. The supplement includes:

  • 5 new classes
  • 2 augmented classes

Pardon me, I've purchased this a while ago and am interested in it potentially going onto Foundry (my personal preferred VTT). Is anyone working on it?

Hi Lizzie! We do not currently have plans to sell SnS on Foundry, but there are a few folks who have worked on at least partial imports. If you join our discord server, which you can find from our website hopepunkpress.com, I'm sure people will be happy to share!

Hi Neil, the Core Sourcebook does not have an alien generator (assuming you mean something like a random table to create aliens). The Galactic Primer on Natural Environments has over 100 monsters/aliens as a bestiary, however.

Hello!
I have really been loving your System so far and am happy to say that my player's are also having a blast!
Speaking of which - I wanted to ask about the blast radius of a Rocket / Rocket Launcher! In the description it states that the fired rocket deals damage in a wide Area but i couldn't find anywhere just how Large the area is supposed to be. Any advice would be heavily appreciated ^-^

I wish you (and everyone reading this) happy holidays and a happy new year!

Hi Justin! Sorry for the long overdue reply. Rockets should use the 'radius' property, the same as grenades. It's an oversight that we forgot to include it as a tag on those weapons!

Hello, i'm running this for my players at the moment and i am loving it! I do have some questions about things that arent covered in the book though, and i feel they probably should be.
1. How do you repair health points for ships and what costs/times are associated with that? (Only reference to this is the repair kit but that doesn't explain much at all)
2. Can a ship be repaired after it has been rendered inoperable in the depths of space?
3. How much do ship developments cost? There is no table for this in the book and so it's a bit of guesswork, but it seems rather an important detail.
4. What is the reasoning that a robot (Roboticist companion) can't operate in space without independence from atmosphere or spacable upgrades? My players asked and i didnt have an answer.

Hi Liam, thanks for picking up the system!

1. It is generally assumed that outside of combat, given sufficient time, a spaceship can be repaired with a Wisdom (Mechanics) check. We recommend that this check determine how long repairs take, rather than how successful they are. Repairs in general are up to GM discretion - there are no current rules about repairing spaceships during combat.

2. Inoperable ships are briefly mentioned on page 237 in the Base HP section. "A wrecked ship can be repaired over the course of many hours of work with the appropriate supplies." The above suggestion for how to handle repairs would apply here, so long as the ship isn't destroyed.

3. There is a chart on page 243 that lists the slots required for developments. Ship developments do not cost credits. They are factored in to the initial cost of building or buying a ship with the appropriate number of slots to support the developments. Adding additional development slots is at the GM's...See more

I think my players will be pretty stoked with that answer as they've been keen to get some developments on their ship, thanks :) S&S is hands down my favorite game system (Especially because it plays nice with 5e which all my players know), you've definitely got a customer in me for any future work.

The Roboticist class focuses around building a robot companion or creating a Mech! Depending on how you set up your game, those mechs can be spaceship sized for Gundam type adventures or smaller for more intimate things.

Sorry for the delay on the reply!

At present, we have no rules written for any mode of FTL travel besides the wormhole gate system. Warp drives (ala Star Trek) do not currently exist in the Nacora Galaxy. Thanks for the question!

To the publishers - how would you feel about someone creating a module for your system and selling it through DTRPG?

Thank you for your interest in creating content for Spaceships and Starwyrms. We're glad to have created a system that inspires others to write their own content!

Unfortunately, given that the bulk of our new rules, classes, monsters, and setting are not available for use under the OGL, at this time we do not endorse people creating for-profit modules and other content using our system as a base without collaborating with us.

We are in process of reviewing our current OGL content, and as we develop our IP and our company, we will continue to consider collaborations.

I haven't read the material itself yet, but I do feel that any PDF product is inherently made better by the addition of navigation tools. The layout and presentation looks very professional, so I'm surprised not to find any here. May I assume that they're a work in progress?

Quick question, I see that the cyberware mentions that if you replace two limbs or your torso you become vulnerable to Thunder damage, is that supposed to be Lightning damage? Or are you weaker to really loud things if you're aug'd up?

Thunder damage is correct. We took our cue with the Shatter spell and had thunder deal extra damage because you are essentially part construct. Additionally, we found that thunder damage balanced against poison damage better than lightning did as vulnerabilities really hurt. There's more sources of lightning damage than thunder out there in the game and we didn't want the drawback to be overwhelming.

Think of it like this, your cyber parts are built to withstand sudden shocks and overcharged electricity, but the intense vibrations of thunder damage shake their parts loose and damage them internally.

Thank you very much for the offer of assistance. We have been waiting to allow the product to be on the market for a bit before we decide on PoD, Kickstarter, or a third party print run for the Core Sourcebook. While we have had extensive playtesting and beta editing, there's something to be said for a lot more eyes on the product!

Tim R December 14, 2018 3:39 pm UTC
It would definitely be good to have a PoD/PDF bundle. If Eyes are the issue an art-less or ltd (better than the typical "Preview") may help. It's hard to justify a full-price PDF with no other knowledge. Kickstarter probably would get more eyes and if you are 90% may be a good idea.

We have had multiple previews of mechanics and pages from the book on our social media accounts if you are looking for more information before buying. We have a lot of faith in our beta readers and so far, consumers have mentioned only two pieces of errata, and one is a typo. We wanted to give it a little time before we put print on the table as an option so that we can be 100% certain there aren't errors in the print run.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
