Black is Back!

New expanded Second Edition rules now include a wealth of extra material and tools for every Black Hack GM. The main rules still only take up 30 pages, but the full edition adds over 90 more pages of NPCs, monsters, dungeons, traps, magic items and much more.

The Black Hack is a super-streamlined roleplaying game that uses the Original 1970s Fantasy Roleplaying Game as a base, and could well be the most straightforward modern OSR compatible clone available. If speed of play and character creation, compatibility, and simple - yet elegant rules are what you yearn for. Look no further!

The Black Hack is a fast playing game and the rules can be picked up in minutes.

Print copies of The Black Hack Second Edition may be ordered from the Squarehex website and will ship directly after the Kickstarter copies have been sent to backers.

I don't under stand what the D6 in AV represent.....or even how it really works. Can someone detail it for me?

Here's a verbose explanation - the system's simple enough when you get it:

The d6s represent the armour's capacity for protecting your character from harm, and your character's ability to do repairs on their armour while adventuring.

When your character wears no armour at all, nothing gets in the way of damage they fail to defend against and that damage reduces your character's current total HP.

When your character does wear armour, its Armour Value provides you with a pool of as many Armour Dice. Think of AV as the armour's max HP and the number of Armour Dice you have in the pool as its current HP.

When your character is about to take any amount of damage while wearing armour you have the option to declare that the armour blocks the damage and your character takes none of it. To do so you set aside ("break") one d6 from your pool of Armour Dice. This does not change the armour's AV, just like your character's maximum HP does not change when they take...See more

This might seem really pedantic and dumb, but sweet Jesus can you justify the margins? I’m not sure how complicated this would be for you after-the-fact, but the way I see it, it’s an unprofessional blemish on an otherwise very polished presentation, and great book in general.

Don't listen to this guy. Your typography is excellent. I like the left aligned text and especially appreciate your use of ligatures.

For some reason my Avast thinks the new 2.2 file is a malware (downloaded through Mac OS Chrome). Could you check it out, please?

We made and uploaded it in the same way as the previous two PDFs. Nobody else has had this issue, but I'll check again in the morning.

Cool! I bought The Black Hack a couple of weeks ago after hearing good things about it. Hadn't heard of it before, but for 3 bucks I wasn't going to lose a lot of money if it wasn't my cup of tea. Haven't had time to actually play it yet but it's definitely great! I feel tempted to get the second edition too! If anything, good luck on everything! :)

This is going to seem very puritanical, but I’d like to use the game I with high school students, but I can’t use it with wizard nipples. Ridiculous, I know, but administration is already nervous about something ‘new’ being introduced into their school and will look for any reason to say no.

I would never ask if I thought that it was relevant to the theme or artistic integrity of your work but I don’t feel like this is the case here. Would you consider uploading a no art version to drivethru, or, even better, a nippleless version?

Great product, sorry for the absurd request.

I'm pretty sure we can manage that. It might have to wait for a while until all the Kickstarter things are finished though.

This was the one reason why I didn't back the latest Kickstarter. My kids and I play the original game regularly and enjoy it very much, but that's not something I want in front of my children. Great work otherwise.

I'd also be interested in a PG version.

Is there really only ONE bookmark in this PDF? The Kickstarter version I got has only one, the title page.

Thanks, Peter. It is a small book, yes, but when you're at the table, being able to click a bookmark is really handy.

If we find additional typos do we post those here or some where else? On page 83, top right column under the word “Feeble” is an errant “W”. Not sure what that stands for.

Thanks. Here or the Kickstarter comments is fine. Probably just a day or two before the files go to print, but we'll continue to update the PDF after that.

hello, i have a question :
will the hacks of the black hack using the first edition (obviously) will be easy to move to the second edition ?
thank for your answer

I think most of them will be fine with very little work. The main changes are with armour and spell usage. I suspect that some publishers of other Hacks will update to Second Edition and others might issue a some supporting conversion notes. We'll still leave the First Edition rules as a title on RPGNow too, so new and existing First Edition Material will always have that support.

Thanks a lot for your answer.

At first glance I saw the HP changed, but it seemed easy to convert.

I also like some of the random tables, like the one for the unique character goods, holly symbol or familiar.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
