Duel

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Two warriors enter. Only one will survive.

When you stand in the arena looking across to your opponent, it does not matter why you are here. Perhaps you are there to settle a dispute and defend your honour, or you are a criminal facing a harsh sentence at the hands of the kingdom’s greater warrior, or it simply comes down to a gladiatorial battle to entertain the gods. As you stand there with sword and shield in hand, it does not matter why you are there. It is time to fight.

Duel is the first of our Fragments line of mini-games from Broken Ruler Games. Using Fate/Fudge dice, both players take on the role of opposing warriors in a fight to the death. Each duel begins with a random arena, character traits, and other options determined by the dice before diving head first into combat. Roll your 4 dice at the start of each round to determine how many attacks, blocks, and complications are at your disposal as you use wits, skill, and sheer luck to stay alive for one more day. Use your results in the right combination to prevent harm and bring your opponent down. You can even call on the gods for a favour or survive without their aid and gain their favour. A quick-and-simple combat game that needs only 10-15 minutes of your time or perfect for playing a free-for-all marathon.

I tried a sample fight between an assassin (who got no noteworthy features but three battlefield features) and a centauroid mage. Had the assassin decree the fight is in a library with bookshelves, hard marble walls and confusing echoes. It seemed like some rounds were fated to have no effect the moment the dice were rolled, eg. when both sides rolled ++--. I didn't see how spending dice to go first was useful, so I had it be random each round. Seemed like the way to do any damage was to use a blank die to inflict a "can't defend" condition representing pinning or some unblockable attack. A "can't attack" condition was useful to ruin a guy's turn if he had + dice and no blanks to cancel it. I'm not sue what other conditions would be meaningful here.
Ended with the assassin winning with 3/5 HP left. It wasn't quite within the rules since he needed to be down to 2/5, but I wrote that he passed the "please the gods" check and was awarded with his foe's Centauroid trait. ("Wait,...See more

So, you can only ask for Favors when you are down on one point of harm, but the Sample fight has Karn calling on a favor when he's at full health.

Oops. If I recall, favours were changed to that condition after the example was written and we missed that. Sorry about any confusion there.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
