The Baron’s Castle

The Baron’s Castle – or Five Towers, as the locals refer to it – is a set of two-dimensional, top view maps of a fantasy castle with (not surprisingly) five towers for use with 28mm figures in role-playing and miniatures games. The base of the castle is best printed as a single 24-inch by 24-inch map (suggestions on the best and cheapest ways are provided). The towers can be printed separately (on cardstock) and stacked on top of the base map. Three-story towers with roofs (with parapets, of course) – are typical, but you can make the towers as tall as you want.

A PDF is included with an Introduction; small versions of the maps for easy reference; a brief description of the Baron and the soldiers guarding the castle (generic, for easy use with different game systems); three adventure seeds; and advice on printing the map.

A second PDF has the entire castle divided up on U.S. letter-sized pages with a one-inch grid overlay (cardstock is recommended for printing). You can print this PDF, join the pages together, and ideally mount it on poster board or something similar. This map is sized at around 90% of the full level JPG maps included to allow for printing on six pages.

A third PDF has most of the individual castle areas (e.g., towers) on individual U.S. letter-sized pages. Versions with and without one-inch grid overlays are included. These can be printed on cardstock, cut out, and placed on top of your base map.

In addition to the PDF, there are 10 JPG files included with complete versions of each map level. One has a 1-inch grid overlay; the other does not. It is recommended that you have one or more of these printed – several options are described in the PDF. Printing on vinyl is ideal; it currently costs less than $10 for a map this size, and you can write or draw on them with wet-erase markers.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
