"A Swarm of Stirges has me excited about an entire new line of monster-focused books, and this one makes a great introduction to the series." - John Cooper, EN World

A Swarm of Stirges is the first of Behemoth3's Masters and Minions books dedicated to bringing new life to the monsters that made roleplaying great. For over thirty years, the stirge has been a classic wandering monster, lurking within almost every one of the original dungeon adventures that defined the world's most popular roleplaying game.

Now this underappreciated bloodsucker comes into its own as the centerpiece of a complex and deadly ecology. Within these covers, you'll find devilish new threats like the ashmalkin, a miniscule fey who rides stirges into battle and breeds them into hideous new forms. You'll delve into fully-mapped lairs, rife with new treasures and unexpected possibilities. And you'll find a host of new options for players and DMs alike, using the Open Game License (OGL) for full compatibility with the latest 3.5 revision of the rules.

Whether you remember the stirge fondly, or are just discovering its deliciously creepy legend, it's time to believe in monsters again with A Swarm of Stirges.

This 58-page PDF (plus included covers) is fully bookmarked and searchable. In addition, every rule mentioned in the text is a hyperlink to the 3.5 edition of the core rules, seamlessly integrated with the new Masters and Minions open game content as part of the SwoRD Project. Registered owners of this PDF are also entitled to download unique free expansions like printable battlemats for the subterranean stirge lair!

"Old-fashioned bloodsucking fun [for] fans of old-school D&D... interested in expanding the ecology of one of D&D's classic monsters." - Kenneth Newquist,

"A Swarm of Stirges does a great job of breathing new life into an old favorite." - Crothian, EN World

I'll really enjoyed this one. Stirges are rarely handled in a fashion that makes them a serious threat, often leaving them as little more than a "I need to fill this room" monster. This book presents some really interesting variations on a [...]

This book is misnamed, and that is a good thing. Stirges are a relatively simple monster, they're bat-mosquitos and that's about all there is to them. I was expecting a lengthy ecology article on a monster that was pretty straightforward. What I got wa [...]

Thoroughly bookmarked and hyperlinked. Thoroughly illustrated. Chock-full of adventure ideas. Well-balanced material. Obviously a labor of love, and well worth the $5. The demo excerpt is a good indication of the quality of the pdf. I'll definite [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
