What do a twenty year old wrecked ship and an exquisite musical instrument have in common? You will have to catch up to a certain bard to find out but there may be other old secrets that need to be dealt with before all is done! This finely crafted adventure is geared for characters up to fourth level and easily added to any campaign setting. Players will love this adventure, which will have them guessing and keep them on their toes. Packed with vivid NPCs, The Whispering Woodwind is a chase to right that which has gone terribly wrong...and there are plenty of surprises along the way. Update November 24, 2018 - "The OSR has become a fairly broad topic in recent times. It's interesting that my Whispering Woodwind adventure, which debuted in 2002, came out the same year as Dragonsfoot was created which many point to as the start of the OSR. Although statted for 3.0 D&D;, there's no doubt Whispering Woodwind had the OSR spirit. Re-reading parts of it just now, I'm still very proud of publishing it in the early days of the OGL era. It really is a mini-setting designed as a snap shot of the locales traversed by the perpetrator(s) of a minor heist and multiple crimes (arson, theft, murder, etc.). I think transitioning from Chainmail to (O)D&D; in 1974 when it first came on the scene still informs the way I run and play RPGs to this day and certainly influenced how I designed the Whispering Woodwind adventure, or should I say "module?" Whispering Woodwind definitely captures what I personally feel constitutes OSR tonality. I suppose I'm as qualified as anyone to suggest what the OSR might be though I certainly would never want to limit what it might become."

Excellent adventure. I DM for a group of 13-14 year olds with mixed experience. This adventure provides a great way to introduce new and experienced players. It's low magic and relies heavily on teamwork, problem solving and role-play. Gives a great [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
