River of Heaven

Watermarked PDF

It is the dawn of the 28th Century.

The Third Renaissance, or Bright Age as future historians will call it, is at its zenith.

After the catastrophic first contact with extra-terrestrial life that led to the horrific Solar System war, humanity clawed its way back from the brink and finally reached the stars. For millions of people, Earth’s sun is no more than another star in the night sky, a mote of light, a spiritual birthplace that they will never visit in their lifetimes.

It has been over a century since the Machine Civilisation gifted humanity technological marvels such as the Visser Cube, allowing wormhole travel across the vast chasms of interstellar space. Now interstellar distances grow ever shorter. How the myriad of splintered cultures view this gift varies. Some see it as a blessing, a way to draw humanity into a united whole. Others see it as a curse, robbing them of their individuality. And then there are those who would use it as a means to subjugate humanity and impose their own will upon all…

Across the river of heaven, humanity clings to a scattering of islands in a sea of stars. Players can take on a multitude of roles in this future: a crew member on an interstellar trader, a member of the mysterious Engineers’ Guild, a body-hopping Intercessionist agent – out to manipulate human cultures to its own secret ends, a Renouncer Zealot – intent on destroying Artificial Intelligence in all its forms, or perhaps one of the Reclaimers – planetary engineers dedicated to terraforming any viable planet they happen upon…

River of Heaven uses D101 games’ OpenQuest rules engine; a sleek and streamlined D100 rule set that enables you to maintain the tempo of your stories whilst keeping the rules simple and in the background.

In the core rulebook you will find:

How easy is it to separate the mechanics from the setting if we wanted to use our own?

Ho, the cover of the new refreshed edition is not by Jon Hodgson anymore. The cover and the first page need to be corrected.

Is there a printer-friendly version of the file in the download?

So did this ever get corrected? Even on sale, I'd rather not buy a non-errata'ed version.

Does this game include the Traveller-style classics of starship cost/maintenance and trading between the stars?

Una conversión realmente buena de Openquest a reglas para Scifi. El trasfondo no me gustó demasiado, pero es jugable. Muy útil para utilizar Openquest para partidas espaciales.

I have no immediate plans to do a corrected version, having only just released the game. However please do report errors/typos to me at and I will add them to an errata file that I'll post over at If I do an updated pdf it will be in 3-6 months time. I don't have an official forum at, but we have a semi-official one at

It's been 6 months now. Do you have current plans to correct the pdf and print files? I'd love to buy a print copy, but am not going to until the errors are corrected.

I, too, have to say that the editing (number of errors, rules structure, opaque design choices) is rather annoying, and I somewhat regret having ordered the print version of River of Heaven.

There is hope for a corrected pdf edition, though - is there an official way to report errors and ask about rules?

This book is excellent. I really enjoyed the hard sci-fi setting along with loose, easy rules and information about civilizations both less and more advanced than 28th century Humanity. The variations on Humans were notably well-received by my players, though the lack of alien races drew raised eyebrows and set a few players to brainstorming and expanding on the setting. That said, the book's editing is awful. There are dozens of errors, many revolving around the Pilot skill, and I'm hoping for a corrected edition soon.

That kills it for me, and it doesn't sound like it's going to be fixed anytime soon.
A shame really 'cause it sounds like an interesting setting / rules set.

I love many of D101's products but their proofreading leaves much to be desired at times.

I'd buy this right if it were a fixed version. Now word lately?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
