Commit the Garde!

AJOUTER A LA LISTE DE SOUHAITS >

Commit the Garde! is intended to simulate battles of the Napoleonic wars on the grandest of scales.  Entire epic battles are represented; no longer must the players extrapolate the results of the entire battle of Waterloo based upon their game's recreation of the fight for the garden gate at Hougoumont.  Players represent the highest level leaders in any given battle, and as such make the decisions that will shape the entire battle.  Gone are the minutiae which their historical counterparts left to their subordinates, your focus is on your army's brigades, not on the battalions and squadrons.

Decisions made by lower level officers are abstracted into the mechanics of the game, players should understand that there is someone at the lower level who should be taking care of those details (spacing of battalions and squadrons, deployment of skirmishers, sighting of artillery sections, availability of spare ammunition, etc).  Like it or not the real commanders had to trust subordinates to do their duty well.  Often these abstract subordinates will make mistakes (represented by bad dice rolls), whether or not your subordinate's failure is catastrophic to your plan will depend on the allowances you have made for that possibility. This of course is a good reason to have plenty of reserves available.

And speaking of reserves, the most unique aspect of Commit the Garde! is the use of off-table reserves.  No longer can your opponent see the deployment of your entire army.  The location of your reserves is not determined until you commit them to the battle, at which time you place them where you want them (with limitations based upon distance from your Army HQ and proximity of enemy forces).  The skill of your army commander and staff determine how effectively you can commit your reserves.

The game is played on a hex-grid map; the reason for this is to remove the ambiguities of "free movement" common to most miniature rules.  With hexes there is no doubt about a unit's location, it's facing, and what the range is to any other unit on the battlefield.  The intent with this approach is to make this a game/simulation of decisions, not of inches.

Page count 41 (2 books)

2 Introductory Scenarios (Valmy 1792 and Corunna 1809, 8 total pages and 2 maps)

Playing time (2-6 hours, depending on scenario and number of players, more players = faster play)

What miniatures, tokens or blocks are used in the game to represent the fighting forces?

Personnally, I use 15mm figures based for Age of Eagles/Napoleon's battles (4 figures per "stand" for infantry, 2 figures per "stand" for cavalry, 1 gun & 2-4 gunners for artillery). Each stand is basically a strength point.

You can use any basing you have, or even just blocks for strength points, as long as all players understand the system you are using.

I understand the problem, but I don't know how to fix it yet. I get a preview but it is for the Corunna scenario file instead of the main "rules" file. I have submitted a question to WargameVault help to try to fix it.

as the game is played on hexes - are there hex versions of battlefields provided and what is the average size of a hex map for a game?

Each scenario includes a hex-map, the hex maps are typically 12-18 hexes (some are slightly larger), with each hex being about 500 yards across (about 3.5 hexes per mile). With a 4" hex-mat, this makes the battlefield 4' x 6'.

Something updated yesterday.. but what? The latest rules are showing as the November 2019 version.

Oh, for anyone who hasn't got this - you really should, if you want to be in the position of a general rather than an endless succession of colonels or captains.

One file link was returning the wrong file, I updated with the correct file (the National Characteristics file to assist people when developing their own scenarios).

Ah. If I click on '(CtG National Character Book 30Jan17)' on the 'you have purchased this product' links here, I get ValmyUnitLabels30Jan17.pdf .. but a 230kb file rather than the 656kb one I had of that name. (It still is the unit labels though.)

I have the Unit and National Characteristics Book ('As of January 30th, 2017), probably from the 'my library' links.

Same sort of thing looks to have happened again, unless I really can't click in the right place: the link to 'CtGRules6Oct21.pdf' gets you (me!) the four page September 21 (file name) / October 21 (date on the bottom of each page) reference sheets PDF.

I don't know why this happens, I reviewed everything before I finalized the updated files. When I returned (just now) and checked again the descriptions for the files were mixed up...I have attempted to straighten them out. (Thank you for your patience.)

Hmm, still happening here. The file names I see are: Corunna Map.jpg, Valmy Map.jpg, Corunna Scenario File 1Oct2012.pdf, Corunna Unit Labels.pdf, Corunna Time Record Card.pdf, Valmy Time Record Card.pdf, CtG Updates 30Jan17.pdf, CtG Rules 30Jan17.pdf Valmy Unit Labels 30Jan17.pdf, Commit the Garde, Rules 8 Nov 19.pdf, CtG National Character Book 5Jan21.pdf, CtGNationalCharacterBook30Jan17.pdf, CtGNationalCharacterBook5Jan21.pdf, and CtGRules6Oct21.pdf

Note that the Sep21 reference sheets don't appear in the list, but that's the file that gets downloaded when I try to download the Oct21 rules.

No problem!
