So does this have an alien or planet generator?

I picked this up back in 2012 and for some reason no longer appears in my Library. It looks like the game was updated in the years since; were the changes substantial, or mostly minor errata fixes? I'd prefer not to purchase this again if the changes were minimal.

In addition to errata there were 6 pages added to the rulebook that you may want in order to run a complete game. Thanks for asking!

So is it common practice for a playtester to leave a review of a product? Seems to imply an element of bias, Alejandro P.

Not when it comes to misleading potential customers.

I have playtested many games I did not like and said as much in reviews. Playtesters are just as eligible (and fallible) as any other reviewers.

Except in this case, apparently. That review is glowing. Shame the person who didn't playtest it didn't seem to agree.

Often times I find that a ruleset may read brilliantly but play like crap. Alternately, some may be awful to read but a heck of a lot of fun to play. That being said, there is no indication that the first reviewer ever played the game, merely basing their opinions on a read-through instead of an actual gaming experience. I prefer the latter.

That may be the case, but when a playtester is as enthused about a system as the reviewer was, it tends to invoke feelings of mistrust in me...almost as if said playtester had been incentivised in some way. As such, I disregard playtester reviews as a rule. Hence my having not purchased the product yet.

Honestly, I stopped listening to reviewers way back in 1986 when Siskel and Ebert gave "Aliens" two thumbs down. But reviews are an integral part of marketing and so they persist and some people may find value in them. I can see why some folks may perceive the glowing review as biased but, as it happens, I had no contact with that particular playtester for years after the session nor did I influence his decision to review the game or what kind of review to give. Indeed I had no knowledge that he was going to review the game at all.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
