Against the Dead

Against the Dead is a complete role-playing game in the tradition of your favorite zombie nightmare.  Set today, in the modern world, the dead have begun to walk and the rules of reality have started to go haywire.  Against the Dead employs a set of rules based on the d20 Modern SRD that have been extensively modified to focus on the human struggle against the rise of the living dead and to allow for a fast-paced, fast-advancing game that is easy to learn but contains enough "crunch" to satisfy the most avid power gamer.

Against the Dead is presented in three Stages which represent the evolving state of the zombie menace and the advancing abilities of the characters that must confront it.

In the initial Emergence Stage, you play a character much like the people you know in real life - students and wage earners (Average Joe/Jane), Kids and Professionals, as well as a few folks learning to take advantage of the loosened rules of reality (Believers and Goths).  What you lack in power, you have in potential - even the weakest zombies present a deadly threat - but you are keen to learn what it takes to defeat them.

In the Ascendance Stage, society has begun to break down and the modern comforts are becoming scarce.  You have developed the abilities to deal with this state of affairs, however, whether as a zombie-head-smashing Corpse Basher, a gun wielding Battle Scarred Veteran, a magic channeling Mystic, or as a member of a number of other advanced character classes.

Finally, in the Apocalypse Stage, the world as you know it has been torn to ruins and only the strongest and most clever survivors can hope to stand against the powerful zombie threats that roam the land and, perhaps, begin to position themselves to take advantage of the world after the zombies have crumbled to dust - starved into oblivion by the near-extinction of human life and its sustaining lifeblood.  In this Stage, defeating the undead is only the start of your also have to contend with the other humans competing with you to become rulers of the new world.

Playable as a series of quick and fun encounters to serve as a change of pace for your gaming group, or as an epic campaign that takes your character from wide-eyed innocent to grissled marauder of the risen dead, Against the Dead contains all you need to play out any vision of the struggle of the living against wave after wave of ravenous zombies.

The dead are out there.  Go get 'em!

I was tempted to rate this one three stars since it's current overal rating seems a little too high... then I realized I was being petty over some personal gripes and taste issues. This is an interesting little book. It's a great**** resource i [...]

This is a complete game system used for Zombie Apoc settings. Works very similar to any D20 type game system. The rules are easy if you have any experience in D&D. There is an addition to this as well called Against The dead Kicking and Screaming. [...]

Group had a blast with familiar rules, and awesome zombie design by GM! I would recommend this for anyone who is a fan of D20 modern, and it has a lot of replay-ability, and campaign usage. [...]

Against the Dead ("ATD") is a fantastic d20 system rendition of the zombie survival scenarios we all fantasize about on a regular basis. The rules feature tweaks indicating that Sergio Vandal and his apprentices at Vorpal Press have a deep un [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
