Advance the Game

To the next level of play

The advanced first edition game as you remember it.
Labyrinth Lord gives you the play experience of the old editions of the world's most popular fantasy roleplaying game! The Advanced Edition Companion is a handbook of advanced player and referee options. Play the race and class possibilities from the "advanced" first edition 1978 rules. Introduce the essential first edition monsters, spells, and magic items to your Labyrinth Lord game. All of these options are fully compatible with the core Labyrinth Lord rules, so that you can continue to play race-classes right along with all of the advanced classes and races.

In the deepest level of the underworld the Demon Lord of the Undead, Orcus, awaits you. He watches from his throne of human bones and commands his undead minions. Will they defeat you on your quest in the labyrinth, as you seek fantastic wealth, defeat horrible enemies, and unravel unholy secrets? Take the first edition challenge. Fight your way to the deepest level. Defeat Orcus...if you can.

In this book you will find...

  • A complete player's guide to advanced play
  • Additional core first edition monsters
  • The full range of first edition spells and spellcasters
  • The essential first edition magic items
  • Optional advanced rules for greater depth of play

Welcome back to the first edition game table. We saved you a seat.

Right next to Orcus.

This book is not a complete game. You will require the core Labyrinth Lord rules to play.

The core rules: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/64332/Labyrinth-Lord-Revised-Edition

You don't want the Advanced Labyrinth Lord in addition to this though. That volume contains the core rules + this AEC volume. It is both in one.

Got all three, thanks, Evan. There is also a class compendium with LOTS of additional class options for LL-based games. I know the recent OSE stuff dropped and it has a lot of class options.

This product's document file was lasted updated in June, 2011. Will this copy be updated with the changes made in the Advanced Labyrinth Lord kickstarter which ends today? There is no PDF only option in the KS, but a PDF is included with the hard copy.

Is this a better choice to run an expanded game of Stonehell, should I go with something like BFRP, or should I XXX the bullet and do it right with OSRIC 2nd+? This project is getting off the ground very soon, I'd like to hear what people are thinking. All are options, but a blend is most likely. By next week my physical library will be complete. Let the winter set in, I care not, ahahahahahahahaa!

Too late, but really use whatever you want.

It's worth noting that there's a bit of a power creep from OD&D, to Moldvay Basic D&D (which this clones), to AD&D (which OSRIC of course clones). Since Stonehell is survivalist in nature, I feel like OSRIC might make it a little too safe, requiring some amount of re-tuning.

But at first level it's not severe.

The stats in Stonehell are designed for Moldvay Basic as well. The differences are subtle (AD&D armor goes up to 10, while Basic stops at 9, hit points for AD&D are about 10% higher generally). You can use them as-written in any of those systems, but as the players level up, the power will get a little off.

Personally, I find BFRP and Labyrinth Lord both kind of invite tinkering with the ruleset more liberally, which I appreciate. LL and more so OSRIC retain enough historical baggage that I feel compelled to make some changes, or handwave past mechanics no one is interested in. The most...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
