Forgotten Futures

Complete Rules For Adventures in Victorian and Edwardian Fantasy and Science Fiction.

Remember how the future used to be?

When vast fleets of flying ships blackened the sky . . .
When psychic investigators used electric pentacles . . .
When Venus was a paradise, never fallen from grace . . .
When the government's main job was to make the airships run on time . . .
When a gentleman could build his own spaceship and still have change of a million pounds . . .
When there were still dinosaurs and monsters in the unexplored corners of the Earth . . .
When you could find a complete role playing game with twelve supplements on line . . .

Probably the first shareware tabletop RPG, now freeware, Forgotten Futures has been published on disk and on line since 1993. Like all of the core Forgotten Futures RPG material, this PDF is a free download. It contains all of the rules that you'll need to play the game, including many of the optional "extras" that have been added in various worldbooks and adventures. More than a hundred megabytes of background material and adventures are available from the author's web site, with much more supporting material available as a downloadable CD-ROM image.

Note - most of this material still asks you to become a registered user; registrations are no longer accepted, but you can support the site (and Cancer Research UK) via donations, or by buying it here.

The Forgotten Futures PDFs are now "pay what you want" files, which includes the option to download them free of charge. Income from payments will be used to cover the running expenses of the Forgotten Futures web site, which has a lot more resources for these games, with at least 25% donated to Cancer Research UK.

Forgotten Futures has a great premise: take the innovative and often strange imaginings of the early 19th and 20th centuries and use those pseudo-scientific ideas as a fertile ground for a role-playing game. It's this largely unexplored part of literat [...]

Forgotten Futures has everything you would expect from a professional RPG: an introduction to roleplaying, a clear index and glossary, detailed equipment tables, solid GM chapters with plenty of examples of play throughout and don't forget the many sup [...]

How can you give a free RPG a bad rating? Its not very well organized, but there is a lot of useful detail for anyone gaming in this period. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
