Do the maps that are split up on two pages line up correctly? Or are the scans missing text and parts of the image due to the curve of the page?

I’ve gotten halfway through the book and I have no trouble reading the text on my phone (though the print in the Notes is really small). Except for one minor issue (the inhabitants of Venus should be called “lizard people,” not “Lizard-Men”), it’s really good so far. Definitely worth five dollars for the PDF.

While I haven't looked at the files in years (and it would take a while to dig them out of the archives), John P.'s comment is probably fair. The PDFs of the original Space 1889 books are all 16 year old scans of almost 40 year old material, so they have both the weaknesses of 1989 print technology and 1999 scan technology. IIRC Conklin's especially suffered from 80s printing artifacts.

By the time I put these books into production (and the scans used here are the same scans used to print the reprint paper editions, which had the weaknesses of 1999 Print-on-demand tech), GDW had been out of business for three years and the original printer files were either inaccessible to Frank Chadwick, the RP holder, or simply didn't exist. For example, Frank actually didn't own a copy of Conklin's, and was eager to get a copy of the reprint edition to fill out his library.

As far as the price goes, I don't know what a fair price for this 1999 scan of a 1990 book would be, but I can tell you most of...See more

In my opinion, the price is just a bit high for a mediocre scan. Many pages are a little fuzzy, small text is difficult to read in places and many pages are off-kilter just a bit, with shadow lines from scan.

There's a lot of good information, but more attention needed to be paid to making a good scan.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
