H.G. Wells' Little Wars

Originally written in 1913 by one of the greatest science fiction authors, this is a reprint of the book that gained H.G. Wells the title "Father of Modern Wargaming." Little Wars will appeal to science fiction fans, history buffs, students of politics and international affairs, wargamers, RPGers, and anyone else interested in the works of this great writer.

Skirmisher’s edition of Little Wars is divided into a Foreword, an Introduction, six Chapters, and an Appendix. Features of this edition include:

  • Clear, authoritative, and entertaining text that reveals both the great mind and the sense of humor possessed by one of the world’s greatest science fiction authors.
  • A complete miniatures wargame system that can be played as-is or used as the basis for other miniatures rules.
  • Foreword by Gary Gygax, whose development of Chainmail and Dungeons & Dragons were influenced by H.G. Wells in general and by Little Wars in particular.
  • Introduction by publisher Michael O. Varhola that discusses the relevance of this book both when it was originally published and now.
  • Chapters titled "Of the Legendary Past," "The Beginnings of Modern Little Warfare," "The Rules," "The Battle of Hook’s Farm," "Extensions and Amplifications of Little Wars," and "Ending With a Sort of Challenge."
  • Appendix on Kriegspiel that expands upon Little Wars and shows how it can be adapted into a military training tool.
  • 20 black-and-white photographs, 19 of them from an original 1913 edition of Little Wars.
  • More than 200 line drawings from the 1913 edition of the book, shown here in red just as they were in the original.
  • Original illustrations for the Foreword and Introduction by artist George Sierestski.

This book is part of a thematic series of works on miniatures wargaming published by Skirmisher that includes the H.G. Wells books Little Wars and Floor Games and the company’s spinoff Little Orc Wars rules, the Robert Louis Stevenson Book Stevenson at Play, our namesake Skirmish! system, and the Quactica miniatures rules.

Be sure to check out Skirmisher Publishing's popular and Platinum-bestselling TSRPG (Travel-Sized RPG)! This improv storytelling game designed for a storyteller and one or more players can easily be played anywhere, from the airport waiting area you are stuck in, to the overnight in some hotel where there is nothing to do (and also, of course, in your own home). All the basic rules fit on one page; no dice are needed; characters have just two stats; and any bookkeeping that might be required can be done on a cocktail napkin with a pen borrowed from a waiter. TSRPG is fully supported with sourcebooks that include "Arms, Armor & More," "Wands, Wagons, Whips & More," and "OS-TSRPG," along with eight compelling scenarios, "A Long Way to the Top," "A Midsummer Night's Scheme," "On the Plane of Magma," "A Violet Shade of Death," "A Rose for Erato," "Into the Terrorium," "Whiskey in the Jar," and "Temple of the Banished Suns," all of which include pregenerated characters and the basic rules for the game, allowing them to function as quick-starts for it. We have also had TSRPG translated into a number of other languages, including German (along with two adventures, „Eine Rose für Erato“ and „Auf der Ebene des Magmas“), Spanish (along with four adventures, "Una Rosa Para Erato," "Un Tono Violeta de Muerte," ""¡El Plan de Una Noche de Verano"," and "En el Plano de Magma" and the "Armas, Armaduras y Más" supplement), and Ukrainian

Published in 1913. All of the original contents are in the public domain. I would translate Floor Games as well.

Why is there so much white space around the text? If I wanted to print this, I'm either wasting a lot of paper or it would be too small to read in booklet form.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
