CWP #42 — More Oathbound

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Workbook Partials are excerpts from the campaign notes of our ongoing “Coup de Main” old school D&D campaign. Raw transcripts intended for experienced fellow travelers.

Issue Synopsis

“Oathbound” character classes are a series of magically similar classes featuring an unique form of divine magic: a mortal magician twists their soul into a tool capable of wielding divine Power with mental discipline, oaths and bonds. They form an artificial Power Pool, enabling the relatively frail mortal soul to echo divinity in a small way. It’s a distinct way of approaching divine magic vis-a-vis the Cleric.

The most prominent Oathbound class is the Paladin back in CWP #15, but the setting includes a variety of others, such as Anti-Paladins, Elf-Friends, Warlocks, Favored Souls... similar in rules mechanics, but hardly in the onerous oaths and disciplines expected of them

About the Workbook Partials series

In case you're unfamiliar with the series as a whole, a couple of observations:

An "ashcan" series: The CWP series is an attempt at circumventing my own perfectionist tendencies by writing my campaign notes in a low-effort format. This is material oriented towards and informed by real play, but it is not professionally finished game text. Each CWP issue is an essay on a single campaign topic (check the preview!), laying out my current ideas and practice. I think it's great as supplementary reading for an experienced GM, but a complete "game" it is not.

The "fun" trading game: You can in fact get the CWP series for free instead of paying to win. The details are explained in the 'zine (check the preview!), but the gist of it is that you're allowed to trade the CWPs freely to others. So if you like trading games, maybe trade for it instead of buying it. I do like money, too, but apparently not enough to not self-sabotage like this.

Some considerable scope: OK so it's an indie zine about old school D&D, but at least the series is fairly ambitious, with 20+ issues on a wide variety of topics. Hundreds of pages in total, were one to collect them all. See the inside cover (check the preview!) for a full index of what's out there, and what I'm planning to write in the future.

For more information on any of those points, check the product preview. All should become clear.kiehkura.png

Muster is my primer for how to play old school D&D in the wargaming way, the creative orientation and method assumed in the Coup de Main campaign. If you like what you see in the CWP series, then maybe check that out, too.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
