Gygaxian Golden Dragon Characters (1975) for your Old School Fantasy Role-Playing Campaign

In a letter essay published in April 1975, E. Gary Gygax presented a brief description of how a golden dragon could be played as a Player Character without imbalancing the ongoing fantasy adventure campaign.

The demonstrated concept focused on the Lawfulness and shape-shifting abilities of the dragon, so that it (alone among draconian species) could serve as a template for a Chaos-opposing character who could potentially travel alongside human and demi-human adventurers of similarly heroic principle.

(Astute readers will note too that this concept was created only a month after Gygax first published the original Paladin sub-class in Supplement I, in March 1975.)

Standing in stark contrast to Gygax’s later disavowal of any and all monstrous characters as pronounced in the 1979 Game Master’s Guide, the Oldskull Dragon Lords supplement carries his original and more imaginative idea forward as a fully realized racial class, which has been specifically designed for use with the OLDSKULL SWORDS & SORCERY game system.

(OS&S is 100% compatible with the Original 1974 game, 1977 Holmes Basic, and 1981 Moldvay B/X gaming systems. This supplement can be used with any game that focuses on these pre-Advanced systems as their functional core)

The racial class within – defining the Lords and Ladies of the Celestial Order of Aurum, or Dragon Lords – is manifested in a way that retains game balance while also standing true to the Appendix A-infused lore of the author’s World of Oldskull setting. Gold dragons in the World of Oldskull are not necessarily Oriental; their origins derive from the H. P. Lovecraft’s Dreamlands, Lord Dunsany’s Pegana, and purified Serpent Folk ancestries pertaining to the Cthulhu Mythos.

Details covered herein include Dragon Lord background, alignment, level titles, progression, magical aging, spell casting, shape shifting, flying, power control, treasure sacrifices for draconian empowerment, personality, beliefs, and more.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
