To specify my question. Does a 5th lvl fighter immediatly get 3 extra attacks after he kills a creature, or does he have to kill another creature between each attack?

I owe Mr. G and everyone here an apology for my previous comment. After learning more about the game I realized I was wrong.

The big question for me is... what exactly does this game do that is unique? It is YABXC (Yet Another BX clone) as far as I can tell. BX mixed with a little AD&D, varnish with a slight layer of houserule modifications.

Does it hit the organizational efficiency of OSE? Based on the preview, no.

Does sport a mathematical economic system integrated throughout like ACKS? Not from what I'm hearing.

Does it introduce a variety of novel mechanisms to enhance worldbuilding and running campaigns like WWN? Doesn't sound like it.

So I'm left wondering what exactly would draw anyone interested in OSR to this game that is not done elsewhere?

It comes down to the art alone. I am using it as template for classic fantasy for my own houserules. However, there is plenty of reasons to use the alternatives you mentioned instead.

Just another fantasy heartbreaker and certainly not worth the admission price when other, equivalent, options rules-wise are either free or far cheaper.

Artwork is nice though.

Yes, the artwork is very nice. If you compare Dragonslayer to Advanced Labyrinth Lord (PDF $15) then the $15 premium is right there at the max price. No regrets getting it although needs some renovation from my perspective,

Thank you for your this awesome ruleset Greg! I must say it is a true love letter to older editions and it shows it is a true labor of love. People who get it would totally see it at once, and stop arguing about the pricings. Also, I was a KS backer and I'm very happy I supported this amazing book.

I had one question though: the Bullywug entry lists some random weapons for them, one of these is a net, but I don't seem to find nets on the equipment chapter. How would the official Dragonslayer use for Nets be?

How would you compare it with The Black Hack or with Shadowdark, from the mechanics POV?

Dragonslayer has a B/X-AD&D foundation while ShadowDark has a 5e foundation with superhero attributes stripped out. Dragonslayer decides on attack bonus without using a combat matrix but still has Descending AC which is easy to convert at will. ShadowDark uses mechanics like advantage/disadvantage. I got the ShadowDark PDF mainly because the creator is just so likeable but it turns out it is a well-done game. I expect ShadowDark is going to be a great hit at the old-school North Texas RPG Con.

Ok, it has been a week since release. Let’s talk specifcs instead of generalities. In my review I mentioned the cyclopsman. The good part of this race is the role-playing elements. The bad part is the mechanics specifically the math choices. The changes are very simple and fast. (Ability Score Requirements: Constitution 13 instead of 14; Ability Score Modifiers: Delete Wisdom penalty, add Strength +1, notice all penalties add to zero just like other races; Class and Level Limitations: Delete paladin, add the cleric). Everything still makes sense with the race backstory. Now, the options are fighter, cleric, & multiclass fighter/cleric. It is still a rare race without the ridiculous option of paladin which would have required a raw roll of 18 to happen. Another side note many GMs can interpret ability score requirement different ways. Raw scores first then these scores determine race eligibility, then once eligible than the race modfiiers then finally the class eligibility from those modified scores.

Please watch the movie Krull and you’ll see why the Cyclopsman exists as he did it. Whether it fits all worlds, it does a good job being like in the movie for any group that wants them.

The changes are simply math and paladin doesn’t fit the math as is. Plus, human-only paladins is a better old-school fit. The change to cleric fits “Despite their deep distrust of wizards, they gravitate toward spirituality and organized religion.”

Zero interest in more osr shlock but I respect the price point. Too many indi game devs grossly undervalue the work of themselves and their team.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
