ADD TO WISHLIST >

Gaia is dying.

The ices melt, while the seas swell.

The heat rises, while the forests wither.

Extinction threatens millions, in favor of the few.

The Garou — warlike shapeshifters torn between Rage and spirit, between Wolf and Man, and champions of the earth-mother — have failed.

The Apocalypse is here.

Yet, a new generation of Garou now call upon their Rage to confront the forces of destruction, avarice, and greed ravaging the earth-mother. With tooth and claw the Garou will wrest her from the brink of death — or follow her enemies to the grave.

Will you answer their howl?

What legends will the Garou sing of you?

When will you Rage?

  • As a new generation Garou, you will confront the forces of destruction, avarice, and greed ravaging the earth-mother.
  • Utilize the 5th edition Storyteller system to create your chronicles within the World of Darkness.

What I personally find incredulous, repeatedly on this commercial site, is the number of posters who apparently find it galling that they cannot dictate the prices of the merchandise. If you think it is too expensive, then by all means don’t buy it, but game companies are entitled to set their own prices to pay whatever overheads they need to make a profit. The cost of design is greater than the cost of physical printing.

Well, theoretically speaking, the seller does not establish the price. The amount of people willing to pay it do. The reason people cite outrage is to alert the seller that if the price had been lower they'd pay for it, or alternatively, that it would be more appealing to them at a lower price.

It really boils down to this. There are now THREE versions of the World of Darkness overall. There's 20th Anniversary, a true continuation of the Revised versions of Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Wraith, and Changeling. There is Chronicles of Darkness, which was a sort of spiritual successor to the original World of Darkness after the Time of Judgement. Both of those were written entirely by Onyx Path. Then there's X5 - Vampire 5th Edition, Werewolf 5th Edition, and the bait and switch Hunter 5th Edition which has nothing to do with the original Reckoning. The V5 core, Camarilla, and Anarch books were written by a group who had no idea what they were doing and created an international incident for Paradox. Paradox fired them and had Modiphius come in and clean it up and they added two books. Then came Onyx Path and they did four books. Then came Justin Achilli, who was the original line editor for Vampire, both Masquerade and Requiem and Renegade took over as publisher. That's when all the X5 books got super expensive...See more

There are multiple editions, but only one official World of Darkness line.

You can argue each edition as a seperate entity - but my preference was always for the 1st/2nd editions and then skip through to the 5th. I felt that the Revised/20th editions were too expanded into convoluted urban fantasy lore that they lost much of their original horror motif. Vampire 5th edition, Hunter and, to a degree (I've yet to play it) Werewolf 5th edition is a return to these themes in an updated setting and a more thematically precise mechanical system.

It isn't really a matter of what is "official." There are still new books coming for all three versions of these lines. New books for 20th, new books for Chronicles, and new books for X5. The issue is primarily that old school folks hate X5 because of the lack of continuity in them. My advice is stick to what continues the story they want without having to make huge changes via 20th Anniversary. Chronicles is still going on strong and is still very popular with folks even though it's assuredly not the WoD from the classic books at all. And X5 is really for new folks. The ones who likely never played any of the classic books or for people who are okay with it being another reboot of WoD without any continuity from the old books at all. You're missing the point entirely if you think 5th is the only option for "official" content. All three are still "official" content for their respective lines until Paradox says otherwise. I'm just suggesting people take a moment to realize why X5 isn't...See more

No problem with people sticking with whatever edition they like, but there is only one WoD line - everything has to be licensed and approved from Paradox. As I say, I was one of the fans of the original 1st edition. I’ve been playing Vampire, et al since 1991. For me, the 5th Editions are more faithful to the original intent of the 1st editions which the Revised editions had moved away from.

And to be sure, I haven’t got a particular angle on Renegade or Onyx Path. My favourite Vampire books so far are actually the live action stuff coming from By Night Studios.

I feel 25YVTM summed it up brilliantly in their most recent review. If you're still online in 2023 posting hate about V5/W5 etc, you're not a critic, you're an unpaid part of the marketing team.

At least WoD20 is still getting books. CofD is getting axed as soon as everything currently in production is done. Its disappointing to see because there are definitely still gaps that need to be filled for CofD 2e, and I don't think they really understand that CofD fans are not going to hop over to WoD5e because the games they like stopped receiving support.

I wouldn’t call that a completely accurate statement. It’s not that CofD is getting cancelled. Paradox simply hasn’t approved any new books as of late. There’s no official announcement on it being cancelled. It looks more like that they’re reevaluating all the lines and nothing new for non-X5 books until they can figure it out.

I don't know what this was supposed to be but it isn't a 5th Edition of Werewolf the Apocalypse. This is Werewolf the Forsaken 2;0 with a new name. I was hoping for a grittier up to date game not a repackaged one. I think this will be a great game unless you want to play a Fenrir Metis Theurge.

Welcome to Werewolf the Renegade edition, pretending to be the Apocalypse but really written by Wyrm Agents that twisted a great setting into a mockery of itself.

Bought it from Renegade so I cannot officially review. However, I would give it a 2.5 out of 5 stars. The artwork is lackluster and some of the rule changes are not intuitive. I feel like 20th anniversary edition was handled nicely but this was rough. I will say that I like the idea of abandoning Metis and removing the specific genetic aspect of being Garou. I like much of the new background material surrounding how the first change occurs and the relationship of Garou to their tribes. I plan on incorporating some of those ideas into my own games but won't bother touching any of the rules from this 5th edition. Between that and the lack of appealing artwork, it was overall not a great buy.

Bought it from Renegade and I must sya that I'm impressed. The book is well laid out and they've got rid of a lot of the sillier elements from older editions so Werewolves are now more likely to interact intelligently with each other and other supernaturals. Ie, there's more opportunity to roleplay rather than just hit everything you meet. There's possibly some problematic elements with the homogeonostaion of real world cultures, but that's easily worked around.

It’s good to finally see this come out. It’s also good that they’ve acknowledged that the 5E lines are entirely different universes from the original WoD and not continuations of the originals. Likely because Onyx Path have the 20th Anniversary rights and they are very much continuations of the originals. I’m not sure Renegade has done justice to the originals, but stating the lines are now different universes mollified my original bad blood opinions of the lines, Hunter especially. Now it makes sense why they’re not Imbued, but it still irks me. This book was in development hell for quite a while. I’m looking forward to reading it when I have time and more liquidity. Maybe Renegade will finally make the rest of the books affordable rather than the near gouging price for their supplements.

It might be good, but I think it's misleading to call it a fifth edition. It's not a continuation of the old metaplot, it's a complete reboot. Most tribes are almost completely different. Important elements of the setting were changed or deleted. It's too different from the original to be called a new edition. Look, I don't necessarily have a problem with the idea of changing, but just be honest and consider it a new product, unrelated to the previous one.

That is all valid criticism but there is no rule that says an edition need meet any of the criteria you suggested.

It IS the official 5th edition of Werewolf: the Apocalypse though. It isn’t breaking any rules to revise the game as it moves forward. What different people consider to be important elements is a matter of perspective.

For me, the key elements are an environmentally themed setting, whereby a hidden, tribal society of supernatural werewolves battle against spiritual threats to their existence (and that of Gaia,) whilst all the time having to manage their own inner Rage. I mean, it is all there and it is a really compelling, well developed setting to play in.

It is endlessly hilarious to me that the entire RPG industry seem to have forgotten what the word "edition" even means since D&D 3e came out. This is exactly nothing like a new edition. It's a different game with the same name. A sequel. A reboot. Something like that. Most certainly not an "edition."

I am very curious what your idea of a new edition would be. This is a reboot with entirely different mechanics from what came in any of the previous editions of the game in a setting that intentionally breaks from any of the previous continuity. If that's not a new edition of a game, then what would it be? One of the dictionary definitions of edition is, "a particular version of a text that has been revised or created from a substantially new setting of type." I'd say this qualifies.

Actually to be considered a new edition vs a new game is precisely based on if the new edition follows and is part of the previous versions continuity and game system. Of course WotC warped this perception with 3 different fantasy games they put the D&D label on but none of them are D&D.

As for this W5... this is The Forsaken being reimagined and forced into a warped version of The Apocalypse cosmology. Nothing says this more than all the changes made to the Get of Fenris.

It most certainly is a new edition, and no, angry fans don’t get to decide what qualifies as a new edition or not. It merely demonstrates that they are edition warring when they try to. This is the official Werewolf: The Apocalypse 5th edition, regardless. I personally think it is a more faithful edition to the 1st edition than the last one.

I got it from Renegade too, and I really like it. This is mainly because I like the way the rules mesh with the themes and, actually, I like the layout and presentation a lot. It really creates a primal, tragic and savage feel which I think is appropriate.

I do think there needs to be an acknowledgment on how it is a reimagining of the original game, rather than an attempt to maintain meta-plot continuity but I do hope criticism doesn’t just descend into edition warring.

Preordered it at Renegade as well, and I was kinda disappointed. Again.
And no, it was not the price and I like the leaner rules of x5, even if they need a little homebrewing once in a while - just like x3/x20.

I can't even put into words why exactly this game bothers me, but the inbred nihilism in this reimagining is certainly one of the reasons.

I hope they open the Storytellers Vault soon, so this can hopefully be fixed by people who actually like this game.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
