Cursed Creatures: A Foragers Guild Guide

A system-neutral horror-fantasy toolkit.

Amidst the gloom-shrouded woods, where the ancient trees stood as solemn sentinels to centuries of secrets, there dwelled a cursed creature. Its existence was a whisper in the wind, a spectral presence that haunted the darkest corners of the forest. Eyes like smoldering embers gazed out from the shadows, unblinking and unnerving, as the creature moved with a twisted grace, its matted fur rustling softly against the fallen leaves. Its silhouette was an enigma, a grotesque amalgamation of feral forms mutations. This forsaken abomination, born of an unrighteous pact and bathed in the eerie luminescence of a blood-red moon, was the harbinger of dread, a harbinger that beckoned forth a tale woven in the threads of ancient curses and forbidden magic.

Cursed creatures are living embodiments of the supernatural and the macabre. They carry with them mystique and foreboding, making them potent catalysts for adventures that resonate with players. These creatures serve as focal points for quests, with the adventurers becoming entwined in their tragic tales. Whether it's a wretched werewolf seeking a cure for its lycanthropy, a vengeful spirit bound to an ancient curse, or a twisted abomination born of dark sorcery, these beings offer a rich tapestry of narrative possibilities.

In the hands of a skilled guide, a cursed creature can be the linchpin of an entire adventure. Players may find themselves torn between their desire to alleviate the creature's suffering and the dangers it poses. This moral dilemma can lead to meaningful roleplaying experiences, with characters grappling with questions of mercy, redemption, and the consequences of their choices. Moreover, cursed creatures serve as mirrors to the characters' own struggles, allowing players to explore themes of inner darkness, personal growth, and the human capacity for empathy.

Beyond individual adventures, cursed creatures can shape the fabric of a fantasy setting. Legends and lore surrounding these beings add depth to a world, offering history and mystery. Ruined temples, forbidden forests, and accursed islands become integral parts of the setting, each holding secrets related to the curses that afflict these creatures. The existence of curses and dark magic can provide a foundation for the broader magical system, giving it a unique flavor.

Characters can be deeply affected by cursed creatures. Player characters may have personal connections to these beings, whether through familial ties, childhood encounters, or sworn oaths. Such connections serve as powerful motivations, driving adventurers to seek answers, vengeance, or redemption. These relationships become narrative threads shaping character backstories, goals, and growth.

Cursed creatures are more than just monsters; they are storytelling tools that infuse depth, emotion, and moral complexity into the tapestry of a fantasy roleplaying adventure. They are the enigmatic figures that beckon heroes to undertake quests, the threads that bind characters to their world, and the mirrors that reflect the darkness and nobility within us all.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
