Skylocke Facilities: A Master Template for Sci-Fi Games

Have you ever wished you could re-use a space station map? A facility? An outpost?

Now you can (sort of)!

With Skylocke Facilities, you have 80% of the work done for you. This master template details the mundane parts of every human inhabited structure, so you don't have to spend hours making the same parts over and over again. You get to focus on the parts that make your adventure unique.

Most physical spaces designed for human use have significant similarities, because people all need the same basic things: food, water, shelter, air, rest, recreation, workplaces, etc. Thus, any “realistic” adventure area which contains people, living or working, is going to have repeated elements throughout. This is particularly true for science fiction, cyberpunk, and superhero games, where human-inhabited structures (or compounds, or spaceships) will comprise the bulk of your mission sites.

I love the scifi genre of role playing games, but I struggle to run games in it. It takes a very long time to make an environment believable. I wanted consistency and logic while making mission sites for my players to explore, and it is a lot of effort to build each one with the sort of detail I craved. Most of what is in these spaces is the same. Every time I made a space station or research outpost, I had to remember to place bathrooms, sleeping areas, food storage areas, the power center, the computer core, the central control center, and on and on the list goes. I added the same bits every time. If I missed one of these critical components, the space somehow felt that extra bit lacking. “Where do people go to the bathroom around here?”

So I set out to build a master template. What if I could use one map, or collection of pieces of maps, for all the bits that stay the same? That way, when I needed a research laboratory for my players to break into, and I need it next week, I wouldn’t have to start from scratch. I could put in my notes, “Basic Facility S2-, off-site Habitation and Power. Workplaces dedication to research. There is a bio-filtered vault connected to the Work section.” All I would have to build is the special vault, since everything else could be referenced during play with my template.

This is the portion of the map you hate to keep drawing, a reference of the notes you don't want to write. All you’ll need is a brief description of how you modified the template, anything specific to your adventure, and this book to run it for your table.

Here’s a bonus! Skylocke Facilities is written to be completely compatible with the Shadowflyght Stealth Supplement. The Play Reference includes notes on stealth and security related details, so you can combine both supplements for an enhanced experience.

*This art-free book was written entirely by a human.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
