The Paranoia Core Book

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Many roleplaying games have rules that are applied objectively so players can help each other do heroic things like saving yet another kingdom, fighting more orcs, or something else that has been done repeatedly in other RPGs.

That is not this game. This is the Paranoia roleplaying game.

This is one of those rulebooks that’s fun to read and even more fun to play. Paranoia does not take itself seriously, so we can find dark humour in bureaucracy, politics, businesses, and a lot more. No sacred cows but one–make sure the GM and players are all having a great time. Is that not refreshing for a roleplaying game? Maybe that is why this science fiction RPG has won lots of awards over the years.

Paranoia

In this darkly humorous roleplaying game, The Computer loves you but it is insane happy. You will be sent on impossible glamorous missions filled with Catch-22s fun and satire safety. Your teammates are out to kill support you, and you are out to kill protect them. All in all, your missions will be dangerous entertaining and you will likely die be promoted.

And here it is, a brand-new edition for the modern world. Surely there is nothing happening these days worthy of satire, right?

Check out the Accomplice Book too, which adds lots of new goodies to your games, including the ability to use rules and missions from any previous edition of Paranoia!

When are we ( the folks that received physical copies from the 2023 kickstarter ) going to receive codes for digital copies here through DriveThruRPG ? I don't really want to have to re-purchase.

Hello, I see you Famous Game Designers (tm) have kept the XP points as currency from the previous edition. But I haven't been able to locate prices for items or services in the core book (and the PLC favors mention purchasing items with XP).

My PCs loved looking over the catalog if they were flush with XP, am I overlooking a price list in the book? Knowing the price of Bouncy Bubble Beverage is imperative to maintain mandatory happiness quotas. :)

The basic mechanics base on the "Red Clearance Edition" from March 2017, D6 pool system.

This is the latest edition as of 2023. All future releases will be written with these rules.

Forgetting which editions are un-editions is treason, citizen.

I am someone who is genuinely interested in purchasing and running Paranoia but their rulebook lineup is an absolute debacle. No idea where to start so easiest not to bother.

Appreciate the response and I feel bad about being salty with my earlier drive-by. I've looked into things more closely since and see that this and the Accomplice book are the new edition. It was the 'Red Clearance' etc. stuff that was doing my head in. I'm not a publisher of course but I just feel like it wouldn't hurt to slap an edition number on there somewhere!

How is this different to Paranoia 2nd ED from West End Games?

Hi there, I'm the game's lead designer. This edition uses a d6 dice pool and some different mechanics than 2nd ed, but one of our design goals was to embody Paranoia's classic setting. Commie mutant traitors are still public enemy #1, and in the Accomplice Book, you'll find rules for converting any 2nd ed. stuff to the latest edition.

Will there be a POD version available in the near future? Hard cover options?
Thanks!

Is this the same book as Paranoia Perfect Edition? PPE, released less than a year ago, has a name that leads me to believe it is a core book, but it would be strange to release a new(?) core book within the year, right? The only way that would make sense is if say, "Before our promotion to a new edition, we say goodbye to Red Clearance with this definitive printing," but that doesn't seem to be the case. Y'all successfully caught the interest of a new customer, debit card in hand, but the messaging here is so bad I am stopped in my tracks.

So uh, I guess... Y'all hiring for any public relations positions?

Hey I figured it out. If you're curious, I had to...
Google both books. After trying a few places, including the product page for both books...
I wound up on the PPE kickstarter.
Went to the community tab.
Scrolled down TEN entries, requiring a "Load more" click.
Clicked "Covers Reveal" piqued by pluralization.
And then only through inference did I discover both PPE and this book are the same edition.

What I still do not know is why in the name of Yah above would both these books be on the market nigh simultaneously with names that neither confirm nor deny any breed of interrelation. I still do not know what one book may hold that the other may lack. I imagine the answers sit in either that old kickstarter project or under some animated element of your website, but I'm good for the day.

apologies for all the yappin'

'Perfect Edition' was never released as such - it is exactly the same book as this one, but was called 'Perfect Edition' during the Kickstarter. The title was subsequently changed.

Hope that helps!

This is PPE, 100% percent. I know because I designed it. :)

As Matthew stated, the "Perfect" part was dropped in the end. I have a feeling folks will still call it Perfect, which is fine by me.

It uses the same core rules, including the d6 dice pool. However, cards are gone and there are a few other tweaks, such as having more options for spending Moxie. It also harkens back to the classic Paranoia setting, with Commies being the main bad guy again. They're similar enough that you could run RCE missions in this edition on the fly, but newer products will take advantage of the new edition's ruleset.

My concern is they also released the accomplice book at the same time which could have just been incorporated into the core rulebook. Then they could have charged a little more. Also the 20 th anniversary edition of the werewolf apocalypse is 5 cents per page at 24.99. Not a new book but just one comparison.

We wanted to keep the rulebook short - Paranoia is not the sort of game where you should have a massive rulebook, so all the optional bits and pieces were placed in the Accomplice Book.

Hope that helps!

That was my decision so my fault. What I wanted was to create a companion book that is completely optional, something NOT required to buy in order to play. I think the Accomplice Book adds some great things, such as ways to convert all old Paranoia books to the new edition, but it's separate because it's not needed to run Paranoia.

This edition is a heavily revised version of Red Clearance Edition (which I think came out in 2017). For example, cards are no longer used or supported. (They can be added in without a problem, but there is no official support for cards anymore.)

The setting is a bit different, as we wanted to return to a more "classic" feel. For example, Commies are back to being the main enemy of Alpha Complex.

$30 USD doesn't sound too ridiculous to me. That's a little over 20 cents a page and some of those pages will have pictures on them! Why do you think it's ridiculous?

Because it's 20 cents a page for a digital book. You do not have to share that opinion.

Yeah but what else ya gonna type in the lil box labeled "comment" under a product? If not now, then when? If not here, then where? Don't stop anyone from singing the song inside their heart. Even if its page-dollar ratios.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
