Into the Shadowlands

Into The Shadowlands

(A complete 3rd party supplement to Shadowdark RPG)

**Version 1.2 update details down below**

This supplement includes 9 new classes:

  • Apothecary
  • Assassin
  • Barbarian
  • Druid
  • Knight
  • Paladin
  • Ranger
  • Sorcerer
  • Warlock

And a new method for categorizing armor types, 80 new spells, alternative arcane mishap tables and an arcane "Devastation table", a list of spellcasting house rules, bonus house rules, my current initiative house rule, mechanics for exhaustion, temporary hit points, and corruption, and a small list of diseases.

Shadowdark RPG was brilliantly designed with clarity, brevity, and a massive amount of skill. My goal for this supplement was to expand upon what the Arcane Library masterfully created and make it even easier for those shifting over to the OSR from 5e. Some classes such as the barbarian, paladin, and warlock have familair abilities and playstyles to their 5e versions but with their own Shadowdark twist.

I designed each class carefully and went throough MANY iterations to find the sweet spot that keeps the design intent and philosophy of the core game. Additionally, I applied the same care and attention to detail when designing all 80 spells in this document. With that said, I hope you enjoy my additions to Shadowdark as much as I did designing and playtesting them.

Please note that I will be updating this document with patches/tweaks as further playtesting continues. As of right now (10/15/23), this is the most stable and up-to-date version of Into the Shadowlands. All future updates will be added here.

**Version 1.2 Update Details (10/15/23)**

  • Fixed formatting for Apothecary's Concoction List
  • Updated several Concoctions
  • Updated Assassin's verbiage to say "Unaware" instead of "surprised"
  • Changed Assassin class abilities: Removed poisoner, changed talents, etc. Poisoner feels like it belongs in its own class. Keeping it would make the Assassin feel like a strictly better pick over the Thief.
  • Barbarian Brutal Strikes ability now includes objects
  • Improved Barbarian's 2 roll
  • Knight's Knighthood ability has been changed
  • Updated Paladin's "Lay on Hands" verbiage
  • Updated Ranger's "Craft Salve" verbiage
  • Changed Ranger's "Quarry" from a d12 to advantage on damage dice rolls to better differentiate it from the Arcane Library's Ranger
  • Updated Warlock pacts
  • Fixed typos and made some slight changes/rebalancing to the following spells: Barkskin, Blight, Invulnerability, Primordial Ward, Rending Strike, Runic Snare
  • New Spells Added: All Is One, Earthquake, Greater Shillelagh, Resist Cold, Transport Via Plants
  • Changed the name of Spectral Shield into Aether Shield and included it in the Sorcerer/Wizard spell list.
  • Spells deleted: Absorb Elements, Pillars.
  • Luck Token house rule added
  • Updated Legal section

**Version 1.1 Update Details (8/13/23)**

  • Spelling and grammar edits
  • Update to the Assassin Class weapon proficiencies
  • Update to Firestorm spell

I would definitely buy this in print. Is there any chance a physical copy will be for sale, either here or on Amazon?

I’m working on it. Never published a physical book before and it’s a bit more complicated than I expected.

I really like the flavour of this. As with some other comments, it does seem to head closer to 5e, but that doesn't rip my knitting (as they say in Scotland). One super minor point - looks like autocorrect snuck in some apostrophes into plurals where they don't need to be - pages 2, 10 and 15 (talent's, Knight's, Mage's). Great to see new content for a non-DnD game, and congratulations on your first publication, Jake!

This is particularly good to bring love stuff from 5E to ShadowDark, particularly useful, in the next update can you add the titles for class ? please!

This seems exceedingly powerful and (in my mind) not balanced with the core classes at all. That said, it's a nice supplement and gives a few new rules for GMs to add to their game.
As a whole this seems to bring Shadowdark closer to 5e rather than OSR, which might be what some people are looking for. :)

This is truly one of the best supplements I have seen for the Shadowdark RPG. Balanced, sticks with the intent of the original game. A truly must own.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
