Starset: The Great Dimming Core Book

A millennium in the future, megaconglomerates, ancient aristocracies, and the political hegemon known as the Supreme Republic of Man sprawl humanity across the solar system. Mankind has stumbled and sacrificed its way toward the stars only to touch the Kuiper Belt and see the stars beyond dimming. The Oort Cloud collapses, and humanity will never leave its home

In the future, the Supreme Republic of Man maintains tenuous peace. Factionalism threatens to rip the solar system apart as humans struggle to survive across millions of miles of hostile space. Organizations engage in espionage and public murder to the weary applause of exhausted masses. Shackles of slavery and eutheanasia reduce humans to little more than flesh machines, all in the name of humanity's freedom. Even the Pontificate, a shining heritage of the Church, has fallen to the shadow of power politics and spreads a dual message of fear and faith.

In such a time as this, where can hope come from?

Starset: The Great Dimming is a grimdark sci-fi tabletop role-playing game focused on hope. Players are everyday citizens -- not great heroes. Players must face the titans of industry and aristocracy and reckon with succumbing or standing against the hopelessness that reigns. The game utilizes a brand new dice pool system that combines resource management with risk to create lethal, tactical gameplay where every decision changes the world -- starting with character creation.

Characters are created using a semi-randomized choose-your-own-adventure. Players choose areas of life to begin their character's backstory and then randomly generate events within that area to make decision on plot points in their backstory. By making these decisions, characters determine endlessly unique starting skills, items, physical attributes, and personalities. If they survive.

In addition, inside this book players will find:

  • 17 pages of character creation details and explanation
  • 6 pages of core rules needed to play
  • 25 pages of items, vehicles, and NPCs
  • 38 pages detailing space travel, the solar system, and spaceships
  • 36 pages of lore, detailing factions and locations around the solar system
  • 16 pages of Overlord (GM) guidance for running a game
  • A starting scenario and 3 example characters
  • Over 440 unique plot points for character creation
  • 19 pages of maps across the solar system
  • Details on how to contribute to Starset's growing lore
New players can start right away with pre-built characters and only six pages of core rules. Starset's core mechanic has players utilizing their vitality as both their dice pool and their health. As injuries and fatigue accumulate, characters gain fewer and fewer dice with each turn. Delayed resolution of their actions means players and NPCs act simultaneously, allowing them to help or inhibit each other and forcing them to pay attention to every step of the action sequence. Only by working together, taking risks, and tactically planning will players create hope in a darkening world.

My apologies, but the pictures and preview posted here are very difficult to read due to blurring, speckling, and other visual garbage.
Please consider allowing people to turn off the background mess, and use a clear font as well even if such isn't considered "grimdark". Information that can't be deciphered is worthless.

The author/publisher have permission to delete this if you want, I'm not trying to dis anyone, just point out that things not readable won't be read, or appreciated by readers.

Thanks for your comment! The preview photos are to get a feel for the content, though. Check out the PDF preview for a look at the game files in the print version; the backers and playtesters have been really happy with the final product's accessibility :D

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
