As a heads up, the SRD dropped on 16 Oct:

Wow no reviews and no replies from them with the first comment being posted in July (it's now October). What they say is true. Silence speaks volume. This is a hard pass.

Asking people to pay *anything* for the PDF of an alpha release of a ruleset is ridiculous because it's essentially saying "hey, pay us for the pleasure of being disappointed with something that's not even half baked yet". Asking people to pay $10 (I'm not even going to acknowledge the $20 price point) is beyond absurd.

As someone who kickstarted ToV, I'm disappointed with the way this is being handled.

If your objection is on principle, that's fine, but as a Kickstarter backer this product should be free for you. You should have gotten a coupon for it:

I agree with the others, please let us know if this product will but updated to the full release once finished or if we are paying $10 for an incomplete product that will be useless once the full game comes out. If it's going to be upgraded or you will provide a discount equal to the price of this product, then that's fantastic. If you are just charging people to playtest this version of the rules, then that feels unethical.

Climbing on my professional publisher soapbox for a moment, even if we assume that that Kobold Press would recoup the development cost of the interim rules content of a free PDF alpha release at retail, they would still have to pay someone to edit and format such a document separately from any future releases.

Like any professionally laid-out PDF without a paper counterpart, this document has independent value. Whether or not it has US$10 worth of value is for you to decide as the consumer.

The only ethical issue at stake here is that editing is a time-consuming and technical job, and the people who do it deserve to get paid for their effort. My whole industry is based around iterative electronic publishing. Our clients don't get discounts on current work because they paid for past revisions -- the revision is what they are paying for!

Please make this available as an affordable, physical, POD product. Digital products are more difficult to pass around the table when making up characters and too expensive to print out on my printer, or at a print shop (not to mention that it doesn't look as slick, either). At least these options do not work as well for me. Thanks.

Will this be updated to the final release, or will the final release be a separate product?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
