From the Hills and Dales

Giants I have always been fascinated with, especially since I found this book at our local library that was all about them. I forget the title and author, but I remember that on the cover was a wild giant's face with hair and beard made of branches spanning out across the cover. Inside it talked about different kinds of giants in the world, gem and stone magic, as well as a huge slew of other things. I was probably about twelve at the time, and just starting to get into TTRPGs.

Fast-forward to when I started to actually create content, and Ryan Langr let me jump on board his Atlantis project, where I got to see some concepts for giants in-lore, and then expand in a book called Saga of the Giants. Trench, forge, and star giants were the three I introduced, and since then, I have just been bit by the giant bug. Giants in other media have always seemed either to just be tall people, or huge dumb monsters, so I wanted to change that and build our DayLITE giants to be different and unique.

From developing the overarching mythology of God-King Gogmagog, creating the heartrunes, to working with Axel to bring to life the concepts and art for the giants, this has been another super fun project to bring to all of you who are here to support the growth of DayLITE!

Children of Gog Magog

Giants were born from the thoughts of Gog Magog, the god-king of all giants. Gog Magog is a triple-god: representing hunger, war, and gruesome death. Because of this, he had many enemies amongst the divinities of the cosmos, and because of his rampant warmongering and gluttony, the gods banded together to kill Gog Magog, ensuring that he would not cause further strife. They split his body into six parts - his head, arms, legs, blood, teeth, and heart - and cast them out into the corners of the universe. Over time, these grew into the six giant clans, who now populate the worlds of the Ether. These six clans are the vulcan, thunder, tidal, steppe, basalt, and glacial giants - all greatly powerful in chthonic and gnostic magicks, and incredibly distrustful of holy folk of any deity. Their true power comes from within them, as all giants hold a fragment of Gog Magog’s name, which, if ever brought together, could cause the lost god-king of the giants to return to life.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
