SLEEPOVER ~ Our Secret Book of Things We Should Not Do

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Pushing the limits of game book artistry, SLEEPOVER: Our Secret Book of Things We Should Not Do is a proto-role-playing game exemplar, an experimental art piece, and a genteel horror expression of forbidden sleepover games and pleasantries, articulated by artist, wordsmith, and designer Kent David Kelly.

SLEEPOVER is many things. It is a game (of sorts) of “Let’s Pretend,” an art gallery, a puzzle box, a Gothic coffee table book, a very detailed explanation of subversive party games you absolutely should not dare to experiment with, as well as a darkly delicious corrupting fairytale, revealed to you in the very private correspondence of one Miss Gwendolyn Glory Wight.

Herein you will learn of a secret charm school society, celebrating candlelit and forbidden slumber parties, in invitations and secret missives dealing with slightly naughty occult leanings toward Bloody Mary, Cat’s Cradle, Diary Confessions, Doll Play, Doors of the Mind, Ghost Stories, Hide and Seek, Light as a Feather (Stiff as a Board), Masquerade, Master and Servant, Mother May I, Ouija, Queen of the May, Ring Around the Rosie, Snark Hunting, Tarot Cards, and Mad Tea Parties.

If you — along with savory helpings of absinthe, sugar, and spice — enjoy (to name but a few of the influences) The Addams Family, Alice in Wonderland, Annabelle, The Birthday Massacre, The Bloody Chamber, Books of Shadows, The Brothers Grimm, The Brothers Quay, Tim Burton, Carmilla, CashForGold, The Cell, Coraline, Crimson Peak, Dead Can Dance, The Discovery of Witches, Dorian Gray, Dracula, Erica Jong’s Witches, Goblin Market, Edward Gorey, Emily Strange, Fields of the Nephilim, Froud’s Goblins and Fairies, The Great God Pan, Griffin & Sabine, Halloween, Hocus Pocus, House of Leaves, Imaginary Friends, It, It Follows, The King in Yellow, Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, London After Midnight, The Masque of the Red Death, Midsommar, Mourning Garb, The Myth of Narcissus, Neverland, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ophelia, Oz, Pan’s Labyrinth, Penny Dreadful, The Perfect Drug (NIN), The Pre-Raphaelites, Princess Mombi, The Phantom of the Opera, Rasputina, Rule of Rose, Salem Witchery, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Sidewalks and Skeletons, Sleeping Beauty, Sleepy Hollow, Struwwelpeter, The Symbolists, The Vampire and Witch Chronicles of Anne Rice, Victoriana, the Vivian Girls, The Wicker Man, Willy Wonka, Wisconsin Death Trip, Joel-Peter Witkin, or haunted houses, or haunting houses of your very own, you might well indeed find the secret arts of the forbidden Sleepover darkly to your liking.

You are invited. Will you not come and see?

Yes, despite having a large paid for library of licensed images ($3,000+) I no longer use others' stock art due to the abusive treatment I have received from artists, and I will not advocate for them.

Kind of, more of recurring nightmare purge. I might have passed it on to the next person though. ;)

Even after reading the description, I don't even start to understand what it's supposed to be. I like the mood and themes, but without knowing exactly "what" I will get, I can't buy it as it :/

That's fine Mathieu, it's deliberately experimental as an expression of pushing the orthodox, so it is intentionally hard to classify. There's no need to buy. :)

I understand it's experimental. But at least some kind of "what content you'll find" would be cool !

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
