Black Star

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Darkness has fallen over the galaxy. The once-noble Galactic Imperium now serves only the Grand Imperator and his inner circle. But the galaxy is vast. While the core worlds may be caught in the Imperium’s grip, many more exist beyond the galactic core, in the barely charted expanse of space known as the black star sector. A haven for criminals and unsavory characters of every stripe, the black star sector is also where the resistance against the Imperium is strongest. If there is any hope of overthrowing the Imperium, the galaxy will need heroes, and those heroes will come from under a Black Star.

Black Star is a rules light sci-fi roleplaying game you can carry around in your pocket. Using the latest version of the Furious Games Engine first used in Magnum Fury and refined in Six-Gun Fury, Black Star is designed for fast play and high-flying action, perfect for classic space opera and heroic science fantasy.

Can the 5th Talent choice a character gets be made from Archetypes they have not acquired?

I think it is intended that you get a Gear or an Innate Talent (or another Talent inside one of your Archetypes). I don't think you can shop for Talents outside the Archetypes you have acquired.
Under Advancement it says: "(c) Buying a new Talent or Mystic Power (explained later) costs 5 Destiny. Buying a new Archetype costs 15 Destiny."
So, there must be a good reason to buy an Archetype first (because it gives you access to those Talents grouped under it).
That's just my reasoning. I'm not associated with the creators, so it's just my thoughts on it after reading the PDF.

I absolutely love the rule set for this game, Magnum, and Six-Gun. Would there happen to be a fantasy one I the works, or one that I’ve missed?

Kidding aside, there may be something down the road. In the meanwhile, though, thanks for the kind words.

Please do a 8.5x11 combined volume with this and the Black Star Companion. That would make it easier to use at the table.

I was going to ask the same thing. I'm happy to hear that Lakeside Games / Leonard will be doing this. I also would have preferred a "full-size" book format, however a trade paperback format is a good second option -- the current books from Lulu are so tiny.

This is a great game, but I have some questions that have come up in the one-offs we've played:

1. Why not just list the number of bonus/penalty dice vehicles get for Handling/Weapons/Defense? It seems weird to have to consult a table all the time.

2. The gear talents often seem unbalanced, compared to archetype talents. Is this intentional, to encourage players to pick archetype talents?

Thanks, Josh!

1. We went the table route for very simple vehicle/ship stat blocks due to the game's small pocket-book format. In play, though, I use the modifiers.

2. So far, we haven't gotten any feedback about gear talents being significantly better or worse than other talents. Having said that, considering the source material, we definitely did not want gear talents to be better than other talents because, despite being a sci-fi sub-genre, heroic space opera isn't an especially gear heavy milieu.

Thanks!

Hello!

Thanks for asking. We are looking at that. Real life has slowed us down a bit, and we need to finalize a second supplement that's in the works first, but we are looking to publish through here as well. Just a question of time to get the reformatting just right. That said, I don't know if we will do premium color because only the sample characters are in color. The rest of the book is simple back and white, and premium is really expensive for mostly black and white. In any case, we will do something; it's just a question of what and when.

Thanks!
Len

I’m back. I have a house rule suggestion for vehicle combat. Before you can shoot an enemy fighter, you need to succeed at a Handling roll to get into a firing position first. IE players go first, so roll Transport skill with Handling. Then the enemy goes next tries to maneuver out of the way, so another Handling check, then the player can fire.

Maybe that was too much. Play testing shows it’s annoying to roll so many Transport skill/ability checks.

Take two. A Character’s starfighter/vehicle turn is two things. A move, and a shot taken, but only if the Transport Ability roll was a success. Also, when dealing with minion fighters in groups, a successful roll puts you on the tail of one, and any 5’s or 6’s add another fighter you could potentially shoot down. IE, a Transport skill of +2, and a roll of 3 and 5 is s success (10), with two out of three enemy minions in a position for you to make your weapon attack roll against.

I added this house rule as we found the Resistance Heavy Fighter, with its weapon bonus W4 (4D6, pick the best 2) was consistently shooting down 2 or 3 enemy standard fighters every time it was that players turn. It was the best fighter by far.

Hey Kyle!

By all means, do whatever works for you and your table. We did not find that disparity. Out of curiosity, are you remembering to also apply the target vehicle's Defenses to the attack?

The RHF has Weapons 4, but I would put that against Imperium Interceptors, which have Defenses 3, resulting in adding only 1 bonus die to attack roll (though yes, against ordinary Imperium Standard fighters, they will clean up).

The other option is not to make the enemy fighters minions (there's no reason you have to). If you treat the enemy fighters as foes or villains, a Hero will not be able to defeat more than 1 per round.

Thanks!

This book would print well as is as a 5.5 by 8.5.
Due to much more affordable shipping costs for your international clients (i.e. me in Japan) on this site, I hope you will simply enlarge the PDF to a 5.5 by 8.5 and make the POD print available on this site.

Quick answer: You use Brawling. If you have the Battle Power, then you can use Discipline if you prefer, or Power if you need to do so while completely blind (good luck with that as a new Hero).

I hope that helps! Thank you for checking out the game! :)

I am itching to run a campaign using this game. Everything about it I love. I do have a question which I am sure I will find the answer to once I add my comment here. In character creation it says: "New Heroes begin play with five Talents" but it looks as though the example character, Jake Starlighter has 6. Did I miss something? I have looked all over the book and I cant seem to find why this is so. Awesome work on this! -Jason S

So I now have another rules question about Black Star. And an observation. There are 10 Abilities (skills and attributes combined). Technically, there are 11 with the Mystic Knights having "Power" as another.

Also, there are 10 Archetypes. Well, it seems logical that each Archetype is associated with an Ability. Blasting with the Soldier, Diplomacy with the Diplomat, and Instinct with Scout. However, the Knights use Discipline. Except they don't. They use the extra, 11th Ability of "Power" to roll all of their important dice rolls, and Discipline is more of a secondary thing.

Now that the Companion book is also out we now have a Archetype that uses Discipline as their primary dice roll, the Fringer. Even more, the new Psychic (not a knight, but a traditional Sci-Fi psychic) who uses Discipline, but ALSO gets the "suffers no complication when spending a Resolve to buy a Costly Success for both Discipline and Psi".

I'm thinking it would...See more

I assume this was there from the first version? I feel like I should be ashamed I brought it up, but maybe not? It might not be that clear, but at least it’s there.

I do like the Fringer Archetype. At least somebody uses Discipline. I get the feeling from their Talents that they’re a cross between a scavenger and a person who just does not stop. Thru shear force of will and focus, they get it done. John Wick or Rambo. Right?

LOL, no worries, and yes, it was always there.

And yeah, the Fringer baseline is probably the frontier settler or the often primitive fringe world native, but that's mostly due to needing willpower to survive in harsh environments. As such, any character who is supposed to have high willpower could fall under the Fringer archetype.

Love the game. It’s a three-way fight with Mini-6 Bare Bones: Imperium in Revolt (pretty much rules lite D6 Star Wars), and Star Adventurer (traditional D&D d20 rules), but Black Star won that fight.

My only question is the Meditation Talent for Mystics also able to recover a Will point instead of a Resolve?

It was always going to be a game I like due to ease of use. I will say that Black Star was not an immediate clear choice for me, as I didn't "get" the rules at first reading. That was mostly due to Black Star using terms that don't seem normal, such as Resolve, when everyone else would say Hit Points. However, now that I do get the game, it makes sense now.

I also have two hard copies on order from Lulu.

The biggest win for the game is that it is so easy to play. Also, it is so easy to play as a solo game (yup, that is a thing). Because Black Star uses player facing rolls, the non-existent GM isn't missing out anything. Even better, the two times that things can get subjective would be GM imposed costs whenever a player spends a Resolve point to flip a dice roll to Success-with-a-Cost. But in combat, that cost is up to the PLAYER, so, again, the non-existent GM isn't a problem.

I don't think you realize just how well you...See more

Hey Leonard. Finally got to run Black Star last night and it went down a storm with my players. This was the second session of a Star Wars game that began with D6. I swapped the characters over, spent two minutes outlining the rules and we were off. It handled the genre so well and really encouraged the players to be more creative and allowed me to think bigger. Everyone loved it. I'm excited to run more. It also struck me that this game would really work well for a pulp game, if that's not already on your radar to do. I look forward to more material for this great game. Will also be looking to pick up a print version.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
