Black Star

Darkness has fallen over the galaxy. The once-noble Galactic Imperium now serves only the Grand Imperator and his inner circle. But the galaxy is vast. While the core worlds may be caught in the Imperium’s grip, many more exist beyond the galactic core, in the barely charted expanse of space known as the black star sector. A haven for criminals and unsavory characters of every stripe, the black star sector is also where the resistance against the Imperium is strongest. If there is any hope of overthrowing the Imperium, the galaxy will need heroes, and those heroes will come from under a Black Star.

Black Star is a rules light sci-fi roleplaying game you can carry around in your pocket. Using the latest version of the Furious Games Engine first used in Magnum Fury and refined in Six-Gun Fury, Black Star is designed for fast play and high-flying action, perfect for classic space opera and heroic science fantasy.

What was updated with version 1.2? Just typos or any rules content?

One typo. Page 7, "Elctro Viewer" now "Electromag Viewer" so it comports with the item in the Helmet (under Gear Talents). Also, thanks for the kind review! :)

I think you personally ought to reclassify this. OSR specifically refers to recreating oldschool D&D, and this is something entirely seperate from that.

You are 100% correct. I have no idea why this is tagged OSR, unless I missed it while copying the profile from another game. In any case, I am going to fix that. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm loving everything about Black Star. Would you guys ever think of putting together an open license for the rules? I have a hankering to hack it to do something 80s-cartoonish, like GI Joe or Transformers. (no biggies, either way. I still think it's amazing)

Thanks! Yes, I am looking at that right now in fact, as well as something for people who want to release Black Star compatible material. :)

Do Archetypes affect what Talents you can buy or their Destiny cost - like out of Archetype Talents?

Hey Ralph!

Nope. Archetypes help define your starting Talents, and they are powerful Talents in and of themselves (serving as a bit of niche protection), but once you exit character creation, you can select any Talents from any Archetype (Mystic Powers being the exception and subject to certain other restrictions).

Thought long and hard about maybe making it more restrictive, but just couldn't see a benefit to that other than further niche protection, and the Archetype Talents seem to do that well enough without restricting your ability to create exactly the kind of character you want to play.

I hope that answers your question. Thanks!

I cannot wait to 1.) Review this (I'm in DriveThru's waiting period) 2.) Buy a physical copy - the pocket format sounds awesome. This is really excellent work, Leonard (and equal shout outs to the artists, editors, playtesters, etc.)

I really like the character sheet - any chance for a standard US letter or (any paper standard, a5/a4,etc) version with two side-by-side (or whatever configuration works best)? I can make one but would be helpful for the rushed GM. :) The character sheet reminds me of the old 1st Edition West End Games Star Wars ones which were nice and compact like this. My players have always liked a smaller character sheet (index cards, etc) vs. the multi-page hydra a lot of systems seem to prefer these days.

Thanks for the kind words! And we can always use positive reviews! :)

As for the sheet, that's a neat idea. Honestly, we sort of figured/hoped people would create their own fancy sheets. In the meanwhile, though, I'm sure you can use the capture tool to slap two side by side onto one landscape format page.

Thank you! The artist is AMAZING; I was very lucky to be directed to him. Everyone should use him, not only for his talent but also for his professionalism, responsiveness, ability to deliver what I asked, ability to take my direction and then add stuff to make it his own. He was a joy to work with, and his Talent speaks for itself. :)

Ok just so i am understanding correctly.

Action dice are all the dice used in a roll including bonus, penalty, and gear bonus dice. In combat I do a point of damage on a success and an additional +1 damage for every dice that rolls a 5+.

One final question what is the maximum number of dice that can be rolled?

Hey!

There is no cap to the number of dice you roll, but since positive and negative dice cancel each other out, I don't think I have ever seen more than 4 or 5 dice rolled at a time.

The Action Dice are the 2 (and only 2) dice you actually use to determine whether a roll succeeds or fails. When rolling without bonus dice or penalty dice, the 2 base dice are the Action Dice. When adding bonus or penalty dice, only the 2 you use are the Action Dice.

Example: I am rolling with 1 penalty die. That means I roll 3 dice and use the lowest 2. I roll a 6, a 4, and a 2. I add the 4 and the 2 to my stat to determine if the roll succeeds or fails. Those 2 dice are my Action Dice for that roll.

Hey Greg,

There are rules for ships and vehicles and a variety of samples. The topic is handled in a rules light manner, as is the rest of the game. To give you an idea, here are stats for a common fighter: H3-W3-D3-S4 * M3. This ship has Handling 3, Weapons, 3, Defenses 3, and Structure 4. It also has Missiles 3, meaning it has 3 shots per battle that deal double damage. In short, there is some detail here, but also a lot of abstraction. Thanks!

I love love this game! There is something quite freeing about not using a certain massive franchise, but using something pretty much the same. I feel like I want to reach for some old rpg manuals and create a bunch of familiar droi- I mean bots, and species.

Thank you! In fact, there are, but we are still exploring our options because what we really wanted is a small pocket sized game smaller than the smallest size printed by DTRPG. So we are still considering our options. We may go with both a larger version of the game available on this site AND a small pocket book sized format (likely excluding the sample characters) available elsewhere, but we aren't quite sure yet.

Len,

Could you provide an example (preferably From Star Wars) of the difference between a Fighter and a Heavy?

Bluntly, they seem extremely similar, almost to the point of overlapping a bit.

Hey,

Thanks for asking!

When I think Fighter, I think anyone who is a monster at close combat. When I think Heavy, I think anyone who is big and strong. While there is overlap, I actually find that -- in fiction anyway -- while the big strong archetype can often hold their own in melee, they are often overshadowed by the more lithe melee master archetype. This is especially common in anime: Cowboy Bebop comes to mind immediately, where skinny Spike is the martial arts master and Jet Black is not, despite him being clearly bigger and stronger. In star wars terms, I'd say Chewie is a Heavy, but not a Fighter. Star Wars gets tricky with Fighters, though, as they often overlap with Force users, so that's harder for me to pin down. Still, I hope this helps.

Also: Conan the Barbarian is a Fighter and a Heavy. This is important because if you can't immediately and intuitively understand how to stat out Conan in an RPG, then it's a bad game. ;)

Just finished reading and this game really hits the spot for me. Love the combining of archetypes. I really like the core mechanic and love resolve. Seems very elegant (and hackable too). Is there some sort of discord or online forum for the game?

Thank you! I can usually be found on Discord here https://discord.gg/HBbqUsMx or on Facebook at the P&PUE - The Omniverse FB page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/PnPUEOmniverse. Hey Colin,

Thanks for asking. Here is the relevant excerpt regarding movement:

MOVEMENT
Movement is normally handled abstractly. Heroes make Speed rolls when they need to get somewhere ahead of an opponent. When using miniatures, roll a number of dice equal to your Speed and add 3 to the highest roll to determine how many Spaces you can move that round. Tactical movement is randomized to reflect dodging, ducking, and the fog of war. A Space equals one 5-foot (or 2-meter) map hex or square. You can move in any direction, but hazardous or obstructed terrain counts as 2 Spaces.

Ordinary NPCs can always move up to 6 Spaces per round (do not roll). Certain NPCs will be able to move faster, as determined by the GM on a case-by-case basis. As a general rule, animals can move up to 12 Spaces per round, twice that if they can fly.

Movement isn’t considered a separate action. However, the GM can add 1 penalty die to your Ability rolls on any round in which you...See more

Thanks. So, just to clarify, the GM never makes Speed rolls for NPCs; all Speed rolls involving Heroes are player-facing? Does that mean that the Heroes suffer penalties to their Speed rolls when trying to outrace animals, for example, due to their higher rate of movement?

Hey Colin!

That's right, the player makes the roll and if the player is trying to outrun an animal, they would very likely get 1 to 3 penalty dice (the game's version of a penalty) on the roll because, well, because animal. That is, of course, assuming the character gets a roll at all (and because, well, because animal ... unless its a sloth).

I hope that helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
