Summary

This book was designed to be the most complete, most comprehensive, most innovative authority on hexcrawl roleplaying game adventuring ever produced.

After more than 35 years of gaming, both old-school through to today's most popular systems, the Hexcrawl Toolkit takes one of the hobby's oldest and most enduring concepts, and provides a passionate and well-organized guide for running hexcrawls, either as part of your campaign, or as the focus of them.  Designed to be used by new players, veteran G/DMs, those entirely new to hexcrawls, and solo players alike, this book will be immediately useful to any gaming group, in any context, using any rules system, for campaigns of any length--even those already in progress!

The goal of the book is to guide readers through the concepts at the reader's own pace and preference.

If you've ever seen a module or other book with a hex map, and thought to yourself, how do I make one of those?  How do I make the one that's there better?  This book is for you.

Hardcopy Note

Both hardcover and softcover prints of this book are planned, and should be available to order in June 2023.  Anyone who already owns the PDF version of this book at that point will receive a discount code to purchase the hardcopy of their choice at a discount which reflects their existing investment.  (So there's no reason to wait, right? :))

What is This Thing?

The Hexcrawl Toolkit contains dozens of topics, organized into the following sections:

  1. Introduction, QuickStart, & Checklists
  2. Planning
  3. Movement, Speed, & Visibility
  4. Navigation & Long Journies
  5. Points of Interest
  6. Encounters & Combat
  7. Survival
  8. Mapping & Cartography
  9. Appendix: Utility Tables, Visual Reference, & Blank Hex Grids

Why Do You Care?

This book was written to contain any and all of the rules a G/DM or solo adventurer could possibly want or need to run their own hexcrawl campaign, design and build their own hexcrawl map, or even author and publish their own hexcrawl worlds.

This book will help you if:

  • If you're new to TTRPGs entirely.
  • If you're new to hexcrawls and have never seen a map with hexes.
  • If you're a veteran G/DM who wants to elevate the scope and scale of their adventures.
  • If you're an experienced hexcrawler who wants to take the detail, realism, scalability, or thoroughness of their approach to the next level.
  • If you're designing your own fantasy world, and want to use a hex map to represent your vision.
  • If you have no time before the next gaming session, and the PCs are traveling across the wilderness.
  • If you want to dynamically generate an infinite diversity of adventure content on a continental scale.
  • If you're a solo player who's looking for that ever-elusive element of surprise and inspiration for massively-detailed, ever-unfolding adventures on a realm-wide scale.

The FlexTale Difference

The goal here is that if you have ten minutes, or ten weeks, to prepare for a game session, there's something in this book that will help you out enormously.

The Hexcrawl Toolkit features the FlexTale approach to gaming design: the content herein supports ANY set of PCs of ANY level, and scales accordingly.  No two adventures or quests are the same.

The majority of the book is system-agnostic, and can be used easily with any TTRPG system.  Some specific tools and elements contain rules language tailored to 5E, Pathfinder, Pathfinder Second Edition (P2E), OSR, and Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC).

What's Included

The Hexcrawl Toolkit features:

  • Over 190 tables, each designed to take minimal time to randomly determine dynamic adventure content or select from amongst well-described and easy-to-implement options.
  • Simplified FlexAI rules to drive dynamic and interesting creature behavior in combat and in social interactions.
  • And much, much more!

Innovation

This product incorporates several innovative and creative tools your gaming group can use to use the content for a party of any size, and any level.

Infinium Game Studio has released several free booklets as rules accessories to help GMs understand (or to help prospective buyers experience) these tools:

An updated version of this title is now available.

Dozens of typos have been corrected, and several additional clarifications have been added to make it even easier to jump right in and understand.

In addition, I've added a TON of new tables to the Adventure POI section (starting around page 250). These tables list out EVERYTHING in the Infinite Adventures books, and other books in the Aquilae Campaign Setting (e.g., Druid Enclave, Dark Obelisk adventures), and can be used to randomly select a POI of ANY type described in the book--over 480 of them!

One more round of proofreading over the next few weeks, and then I'll have the hardcopy available to order, I promise!

Onward!

I was just about to get this when I saw that an H.C. is coming. I'll jump on that combo. You should write a guide to CC3+. The ToUM (Tome of Ultimate Mapping) is good, the forums aren't bad, but it would be great to read how your learning curve went.

Thanks, Chris! I'm hard at work finalizing the proofreading before I hit go with the hardcover.

I've actually written a few articles for CC3+ over the years. My learning curve felt, I have to admit, near vertical--as it has to be, with a tool like this--but I had a high school background in CAD tools so it was a bit easier than it might be for most. I was so excited to be able to realize my dream of writing TTRPG books that I would have persevered through any torture. My advice to anyone looking to get started is to read the ToUM (which is NOT optional and should be bundled with the software, IMO), and to scour all of the YouTube tutorials and follow along with every single one, even if they're not in a style that you envision yourself drawing.

I've been using it for 7+ years, and every time I draw a map, I end up learning something new. :)

You are a force of good and proliferation. I’ve had CC3+ for a long time but haven’t pushed myself up the learning wall. It makes EVE Online’s learning wall trivial. I recently purchased an art tablet for cartography projects but have yet to use it. Perhaps it is time for “Once more unto the breach”. I have a large project that I have hand drawn so I won’t be starting with a blank sheet.

I hope all is well.

Awesome work! I've been prepping a Savage Worlds game with a hex crawl element to it and I was mostly just making stuff up as I went, but this book gives some great guidelines on how to handle things consistently. Can hardly wait for the physical copy to be released!

I just saw this on the bestseller list and took a quick peek at the preview... okay make this an extended peek.

While I don't have time to read through a 415 page book at the moment, I still wanted to drop in and give kudos for an excellent preview size and choice. Too many pricey supplements, give only disjointed snatches, while this gives a very comprehensive overview what the book is all about. The layout is also very nice and clear and the value per page seems amazing.

This definitely goes on my wishlist for my next GURPS Dungeon Fantasy campaign.

Could this be used in a post-apocalyptic world RPG with some work? How much of this is tied to the fantasy genre vs genre agnostic?

The tables, terrains, and probabilities of generating hexes of certain terrain are all designed with an assumption of pretty much earth normal, so you’d want to tweak
Those a bit. Some content (environmental encounters, NPC encounters, etc) were designed with a fantasy assumption but everything was intended to be as system and setting agnostic as possible. In addition to which, it’s easy (and intended!) to change and extend the tables as you see fit for your setting and needs.

Hope that helps!

Hi, can anyone comment on how suitable this would be for the following style of play?:

Players are strangers to the land, and are questing for magic items, the heads of strong monsters (and eventually deadly monsters,) as well as high value loot. These are their main source of XP.

Ideally, hex exploration would reveal 0-3 features or locations depending on the hex, and these might be a mixture of encounters, locations, landmarks and follies. A location is a structure the players can enter and delve into, a folly appears to be a location but has become inaccessible or otherwise of little use and an encounter is an interaction between players and a creature or group, whether combat or not.

Additional hex entries are a bonus, but not a requirement (they'd get used.)

I have a map drawn and ready with the hexes laid out, and have a coordinate in each; this is to be loaded into a VTT app and linked to a database of hex contents, sub maps and the like. This means getting...See more

Hi Matthew--Short answer: yes. The book was designed with precisely this sort of thing in mind.

I'm biased of course, so I would, and you should, want to hear thoughts from customers who have read through the book as well.

I wasn't clear from your description if you are looking for the book to provide detailed dungeon maps of the specific pieces of hex content--if so, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed, but there are utility tables in the appendix that provide some random dungeon generation tools that will help in a jiffy or if you're pressed for prep time. If you're VTT-ing your sessions, I'm sure you'd want something more formal, but dungeon maps are not difficult to come by.

My gut feel is that a mixture of this book, Infinite Adventures, and the Solo Adventuring Toolkit would be an ideal combination to suit exactly what it sounds like you're looking for. Don't be fooled by the "Solo" in the SAT--its tools are extremely powerful to generate dynamic adventure...See more

Excellent, thanks for the comprrehensive reply! I tend to use dungeondraft to prep encounter level maps, and enjoy that prep-work, so I'm specifically looking for a tool for the overworld map to decide what and where to populate that with - but I'll definitely check out the other titles you suggested as well.

Appreciate your response :)

Typo on page 36:
"If the dragon lairs here, then it surely will be present
when the party returns, because this is its home. It
probably doesn’t make sense to even consider a Hex
Change for this hex. If you do change the content of th
hex,
If the encounter is merely"

The sentence "If you do change the content of th hex," has a typo and the end of the sentence is missing.

Yay! I’m eager too :)

FYI I usually wait a week or so before submitting the final proof for printing, just to tease out any typos etc. I’ve already four a handful.

If you’re enjoying the book I always appreciate a rating and/or review if you have time :)

Thanks for your support!

Yep! Hardcover and softcover options. Both probably available sometime in June. Anyone who owns a pdf at that time will automatically get a discount for the hardcopy format of their choice… so there’s no reason to wait to grab it in pdf :)

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
