Riftbreakers is a fantasy Role-Playing tabletop game for one or more players. Within it, you take control of a single character and embark on all sorts of adventures, undertaking challenges that will see you traveling the land of Kaethor, which is being besieged by strange magic storms that unleash terrible monsters in their wake.

Riftbreakers provides a complete toolkit for enjoying a wide variety of fantasy playstyles, with a focus on adventurous, high fantasy style of storytelling. It covers character creation, spells and magic, encounters and combat, monsters and treasure, and all the associated game mechanics necessary to recreate the feeling of a Massively Multiplayer Role-Playing Game, but analogically. This means that all the standard elements found in games such as World of Warcraft or The Elder Scrolls Online are here: randomly generated loot, detailed crafting, dungeons, and meaningful character progress. It also provides all the necessary tools, such as oracles and dozens of random tables, to play the game without the need for a Game Master, which means you can easily play the game by yourself, or co-op with friends.

Riftbreakers features:

  • A D100 ruleset, quick to learn and master. Within it you’ll find rules for all sorts of magical abilities and savage melee combat, exploration, crafting, and more.

  • Classless character creation, with progress built around what you focus on learning and what gear you equip. Want to be a deadly warrior, a cunning thief, or a master of the elements? It’s up to you!

  • MMO-like gameplay, with random loot, encounters, difficulty tiers, quality levels, crafting, and more!

  • A strange yet familiar world, full of unique variations of the most common fantasy tropes. Explore the town of Kar Helos and save it from the unrelenting attacks of magical beasts and other threats!

  • Robust solo tools that allow you to play the game without a Game Master, either solo or co-op! If you’re a GM wanting to run a Riftbreakers game, life couldn’t be easier: use the dozens of random encounter, travel and Rift exploration tables to instantly create an adventure for your players on the fly!

  • An expansive bestiary with over 80 unique monsters, each one of them with their own action table to determine how they act in their turn, and their own loot table, to see what your character gains after slaying them!

  • Random quests, dungeons and encounters ensure a limitless replayability.

The game seems promising.

A few questions :
- How do you use the "interesting finds and encounters" ? For example the "street performer" ? Is it just for the story ?
- For monsters description, when number is not 1, the HP is for 1 of the monster ? Fo example, bandits nurmber is 3, so it's equivalent to a 90HP monster ?

Thank you! Let's see if I can help you:
- You can either ignore it, or ideally, use it together with the random tables and GMless tools to create something interesting. Use the oracles and Action & Theme tables to ask a few questions and figure out as much as you feel like it at the moment about that specific result.
- I'm afraid that the Health score is for each monster, making group enemies quite a PITA to deal with. Fortunately, they usually have way less Health so they should go down fast nonetheless.

It's working for me, so I'm not sure what the problem is. In any case, you can go to blackoathgames.com and download a proper preview there.

Love it so far, amazing game and great work. However it seems to me that some of the Ritual heart abilities have no Rank advancement. Is this heart still WIP?

No, it's all done I felt that some of the powers didn't really made sense to evolve at higher ranks. Happens the same with some other Hearts' Abilities, but it is true it's most prominent on the Ritual Heart. It doesn't make it less powerful, though!
Thank you for your support and kind words!

Loving the book so far. Joined kickstarter for A Thousand Worlds, then grabbed this when you mentioned it. Both are excellent, and quickly becoming my favorite systems.
Got a question; during combat you mention deciding where to place PCs and enemies, but not the grid style or scale. Did you make it planning on grib vs hex? Or mostly just a theater of the mindstyle? I only ask because A Thousand World's has a great detailed combat system, but this one is more vague

Thank you so much for your support! I phrased it like that because I know that some people like to use minis and terrain regardless of how simplified the combat might be. And I was right to do so because I've already been told of a few people playing Riftbreakers that way! It's certainly not a tactical game, but some people enjoy the visual element.

Is there an official Discord channel, or somewhere for players to arrange MMO-style team ups?

Dear Blackoath Entertainment:
Is this PDF hyperlinked (IE. Tap/Click on a page number and you'll jump to that page) or do you have to flick /type page number the Old-Fashioned Way?

Thank You. :)

The Table of Contents is fully hyperlinked, and there are tons of booksmarks to make navigating around the different sections faster, but each page number reference within the text is not hyperlinked, I didn't think of doing so. In any case, there are only a handful of page references in the book, so the bookmarks are enough to do all the heavy lifting!

Me again. I had recently discovered a few solo games. I won’t mention names, that required the setting up of miniatures battles every session while also offering a background of table rolling and story development. I love the tables with those games, but I didn’t like the hassle of having to have a miniatures set up. Riftbreakers is the answer! I’m developing the character making decisions, and I don’t have to have boxes of miniatures and terrain. This works for me. I suggest to the author that you develop more tables and more background for the character - start working on your second book for this. :)

I love skirmish games but I can't be bothered to play them with minis and terrain, so I use hex paper and tokens. I'm actually writing a skirmish game that uses this system by default. As for adding more detail to characters and all that stuff in Riftbreakers, that's definitely always a good thing, but I had to cut in content for this core book because it's already 300 pages long. I probably overdid it with the Bestiary, but I'm overall very happy with the result. Lots of room to improve, though, of course!

If one of those unnamed names begins with a 5, there are miniatureless rules in one of the expansions. I keep meaning to try them out, and I know other people have enjoyed them, but I can't comment on how much of the tabletop minis experience they capture.

I've been playing 5 Parsecs and 5 Leagues with tokens and a gridmap since before they're released by Modiphius, so it works great. The rules you mention are certainly a whole different beast, though.

Hello again.
In the underground cave, rift section looks like the location descriptor versus object pages are reversed. Am I right?

Seems like the descriptor should come first.

You mean the Landmark tables? I guess the descriptor table should come first, yeah. I don't think it's a big deal though, it's not like you're forming a perfectly correct sentence with just those two tables.

You’re right it’s not a big deal for the user to reverse it manually. We all know how clever gamers are they figure it out. But, you know, when somebody buys something they like it to be right and they love when developers go the mile to care. They come back to those developers. They spend more money. It’s just a mile. :)

The Riftbreakers description of character creation is different in the reference sheet than it is in the actual core rules. Confusing. This character is much stronger in the reference.
Just thought you might be able to clarify this.
I like this idea of RB though not flawless, but definitely different in a good way. You’ve really nailed the MMO thing especially with your descriptions.
Questing direction is a little vague. I think it would’ve been better instead of giving n-s directions just telling us what area we’re going to would have been better. I’m going to do that on my own.
A lot of work went into this and I’m enjoying it.
Also, how about a video with some walk-throughs?
This is an unusual system that may need a little bit of point by point discussion for players.
It does for me I’d love to see some examples - ESPECIALLY rift exploration!
Peace and happy gaming

Hey! I'm not sure how the characters are stronger in the reference sheet. It might be a little bit different because my idea is that once you have gone through character creation once the regular way, you'll not want to go through it again (it's like a "skip tutorial" option in a videogame), so you can go straight there and have it done faster. If you are referring to the fact that they start with cash and all that, it's only there to take account for the loot you miss when not going through the labyrinth. Other than that, as far as I remember it should be identical.
I realize the game's not perfect but I hope that it's a good foundation to build on via further releases in the future. The direction issue you mention is like that precisely to account for future regions, just giving myself room to work in the future without closing the quest system to a specific subset of regions.
There are no videos yet because the game's only been out for a week, but I definitely want to record some videos...See more

I’m having a ball with Riftbreakers. The difference in the Ref Guide was with the following text pasted from your Ref Guide:

“Pick 4 Hearts among the following:
- Arcane (page 23)
- Arrow (page 28)
- Bastion (page 32)
- Elemental (page 42)
- Might (page 47)
- Restoration (page 51)
- Shadow (page 59)
- Time (page 64)
- Write down each of the Passive Abilities granted by the Hearts you chose, and pick one Talent from each of the Hearts.”

In the game walk-through (which I really love nice job) you pick one and the rest disappear. That’s the difference I’m talking about really

I’m looking forward to seeing your videos or whatever kind of walk-through you do. Like I said, this game is different and having a clear flow as to how to follow all of your tables would be helpful for me. And I know you’re only out for a little while.
I don’t want to come off as discouraging because this really is great work...See more

Hello again,

You are correct, you're supposed to pick 2 from those 8 options! I'll fix it right away. It's the same if you follow the "tutorial" character creation, though: you first pick 1 among the 4 that appear within the Labyrinth, and then you pick a second one from the other 4 the Guide offers you in Kar Helos.
Thank you so much for your kind words and support!

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
