The Sorcerer: A Custom Class for Old School Essentials

As the party ascends the long and winding staircase that leads to the top
of the ancient tower, the hair on the back of each of their necks begins to
stand. Suddenly, a lightning bolt bursts through a wooden door, a
splinter of wood impaling the wizard as the fighter raises their shield to
protect the cleric. As the thief peers into the dimly lit chamber, she
observes all manner of strange and eldritch secrets. The hair on the
back of each party member’s neck again begins to stand, as the sound of
electricity can be heard from within the chamber. It is then they realize,
they shall likely not survive this encounter. For the party has entered the
domain of “The Sorcerer” …

What is a Sorcerer?

“Sorcerers are adventurers who have an innate ability to cast arcane
magic spells. Sorcerers know a limited number of spells but can cast
them more frequently and with greater flexibility.”

This definition of a sorcerer is intentionally broad, allowing the players
and referee to determine the origin of the sorcerer’s innate affinity for
magic. Perhaps the sorcerer is a descendant of a powerful magical being
or perhaps they received their abilities through a cataclysmic event.
Regardless, the sorcerer has an innate ability that allows them to cast
arcane spells.
