Game Mastering is a Hell of a drug!

So, what is Game Mastering?  Nope, what you're considering here is not an introductory text.  I've been there and done that with How To Game Master Like A Fucking Boss.  No, this is for when you've been GMing for years and already know the basics.

Are you missing something in your life?  Advanced Game Mastering Like A Fucking Boss attempts to weave philosophy and meaning and the search for a greater truth alongside the art of describing stuff, rolling dice, and pretending to be other people.  

Belief is immersion.  Does that mean super-belief can lead to super-immersion?  Perhaps...  That's but a single theme of this book, albeit a central one... a golden thread that carries the reader (that's you) from beginning to end.  

At this point in the timeline, we're faced with an identity crisis.  What is the nature of Game Mastering, how should we proceed, why does this vocation define us?

Venger’s newest offering is stream of consciousness and oddly autobiographical, full of lots of good game-mastering advice, which I won’t spoil, except to say that immersion plays the largest part and for good reasons.

Also Venger is getting adept with Midjourney—the AI art in the book fits perfectly.

Ugh I start to read this book and 7 pages in the author is complaining about feminism and the "off-the-charts" level of misandry in our culture. I guess people can think whatever they want to think but the axe-grinding has nothing to do with the article its attached to, and nothing to do with GMing like any sort of boss.

Its interesting to see that when normally you see most modern RPGs tell you about who should sit at your table, and you're a bigot if this or that and how to check your privilege when gaming. Frankly I wish they would go back to when books kept opinions as such out and wrote a nice book of gaming information to help someone play.

I don't even really care if a game has a political message one way or the other. To each their own. But if one is just going to ham-fistedly inject their position on the "culture wars" in an article that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic, that's just bad writing.

It has everything to do with it. How are men supposed to GM like a fucking boss if they're constantly being used, abused, maligned, harassed, and scapegoated? You may not remember 5 or 6 years ago when several RPG articles and blog posts called us "white male terrorists." That came just as the social justice crowd started inserting themselves into the hobby. Would you disagree that our culture today is way more feminized than 10 years ago? I'd say that every decade or so, our entire society has become increasingly feminine to the point where men and masculinity are demonized. You can't live up to your full potential in such a climate, such a culture, which means you can't Game Master to the best of your ability when under such duress.

I don't know. If it's so impossible, how'd you write a book on it?

Just about every human on this earth is constantly being used, abused, maligned, harassed, and scapegoated. If anyone thinks they're special because they feel trodden upon, they should think again. The "bosses" find a way to get by regardless.

@Jason, it's worth noting that Darrick has stated on social media that his wife doesn't allow him to host games in his own home. Maybe this is contributing to his sense of persecution? I guess he assumes that everyone else has the same problem.

We stay true to ourselves, rise above, we push back, we stop letting ourselves be gaslit. That's how. I'm not claiming that men are the most persecuted or victimized group on the planet, just that misandry is real, and shouldn't be ignored or downplayed.

@Jerry, I've been running the Crystals of Chaos (2023 Cha'alt campaign) in my home for the last couple months. What my wife didn't want me to do is hold sessions with strangers (people I didn't know) in our house. Plus, not run games in the house during covid. And I totally understand why. It's fucking crazy out there! Again, I am not personally being persecuted because I refuse to be a victim. Hopefully, I can help other men who are being targeted in our culture without even knowing it. Read or watch Jordan Peterson. He explains it better than I can.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
