Thugs, Bandits, and Town Guards: Common Low-Level Human Opponents for your C&C Game

ADD TO WISHLIST >

C&C has many official publications covering many different types of monsters, animals, and opponents. There are, however, a few basic stat blocks missing from those delightful books.

This product fills in those gaps, providing stat blocks and information for 9 common opponents not found elsewhere in C&C official publications:

  • Acolyte
  • Common Thug
  • Common Thief
  • Bandit, Poor
  • Bandit, Standard
  • Low Level Boss
  • Crime Boss
  • Town Guard
  • Guard Captain

Each entry is a full listing of stats, including descriptions of special abilities, formatted in typical C&C publication style.

Publisher's Note: There have been some questions about the power of some of the types of bandits in this product and so I thought it might be a good idea to provide some context to the product.

My goal was to provide a variety of low-level opponents - I envision the NPCs here a bit like stairsteps, with each one only slightly more powerful than the last. Three of them, thug --> poor bandit --> standard bandit, are 1 HD and I needed to differentiate them a small bit.

The thug is of low skill and easy to hit, and only gets 1 attack. I wanted the Poor Bandit to be similar to the thug (smae avg HP) but to be 'better' at fighting than the thug because they are trained by the low-level boss, so I gave them 2 attacks - they still have very low HP and AC, so might even be killed before they get a turn, and probably won't stick around for more than 1 turn even if they do get a chance to attack. I wanted them to still be dangerous, and that supports them having 2 attacks. They aren't dual wielding, but poking quickly with one weapon.

The next one up in challenge is the Standard Bandit - also a 1 HD creature, but slightly more avg HP and a higher AC (though not too high) and also with 2 attacks, because they are trained by the low level boss, who is a skilled swordsman (and has a higher HD).

Keep in mind - these are supposed to be formidable opponents even for 2nd or 3rd level PCs... they aren't just 0 level commoners who picked up a spear, and they aren't barely-trained militia who know how to use a knife. They are bandits who work together and train each other and who make highway robbery their business.

This is a nice little collection of common Bandits & Thugs that are missing from the Monsters & Treasures guide. Good for any CKG to have. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
