A survival horror setting toolkit for DoubleZero: Modern Roleplaying

The world had ended, and with it, life as we knew it. The once-bustling cities were now desolate wastelands, filled with the rotting remains of the dead. The skies were a sickly shade of gray, blocked out by a never-ending cloud of ash and smoke. The few survivors who remained lived in constant fear, scavenging for whatever scraps of food and supplies they could find, and always watching their backs for the next threat that lurked around the corner. In this new world, there was no room for weakness, and every decision made could mean the difference between life and death. And in the midst of this bleak, post-apocalyptic landscape, a small group of survivors had just stumbled upon something that would change their lives forever.

Post-apocalyptic survival horror is a subgenre of horror fiction that takes place after a major catastrophic event, like a nuclear war, pandemic, or natural disaster. The survivors must navigate a hostile and dangerous world filled with scarce resources, deadly creatures, and other desperate humans. This type of setting lends itself well to roleplaying, where players can take on the roles of the survivors and work together to overcome the challenges of this new world. The guide can set up encounters and scenarios that challenge the player characters' survival skills and test their moral compasses, leading to a tense and engaging experience. Additionally, the post-apocalyptic setting allows for a wide range of creative storytelling opportunities, with the players' decisions having a significant impact on the fate of their characters and the world they inhabit.

DoubleZero

The DoubleZero System is a roleplaying toolkit. First designed for action, espionage, and thriller adventures, the skill-driven roleplaying system is perfect for mysteries, police procedurals, and crime dramas based on your favorite television series, movies, and novels. DoubleZero works with any “realistic” modern setting that doesn’t lean into magic, the supernatural, or superpowers.

The Toolkit Approach

Roleplaying is a creative and collaborative activity. A large portion of the joy it brings is from making up the things that add to the experience. The reason DoubleZero: Epilogue is a toolkit and not a highly developed setting with tons of worldbuilding details is so there’s room left for your imagination. While it can be cool to read setting guides that cover everything down to the last detail, in play it can box you in and make you feel that your ideas don’t fit or aren’t valid. The goal here is to give you as much as you need to get started, then step aside and let you turn this into whatever you and the other players want it to be.

Content Warnings

When planning a roleplaying experience, it's crucial to consider the comfort levels and boundaries of everyone involved. We recognize the importance of providing content warnings for potentially distressing material. Here is a comprehensive list of content warnings that may arise while using this toolkit:

  • Body Horror: Characters may experience grotesque and unnatural bodily transformations or mutilations, evoking a sense of revulsion.
  • Claustrophobia: The setting often takes place in confined spaces or tight quarters, intensifying feelings of claustrophobia and anxiety.
  • Dark Occultism: The narrative delves into dark and eldritch rituals, potentially involving the summoning of otherworldly entities or demons.
  • Graphic Content: The storyline contains explicit and graphic descriptions of disturbing events, potentially including torture, mutilation, or harm to children.
  • Hopelessness: The scenario emphasizes a sense of hopelessness and impending doom, where characters face insurmountable odds.
  • Isolation: The setting frequently involves characters being cut off from society, leading to intense feelings of loneliness and despair.
  • Jump Scares: Participants should be prepared for sudden and startling moments designed to evoke fear and tension.
  • Psychological Horror: Players will encounter disturbing and unsettling themes that delve deep into the human psyche, potentially causing emotional distress.
  • Sanity Loss: Characters can suffer mental breakdowns or lose their grip on reality, exploring themes of mental health and instability.
  • Violence: The scenario includes graphic and intense scenes of physical combat and gore, which may be unsettling to some participants.

Lightspress Media

Lightspress Media is a roleplaying company with a lo-fi approach. The utility of content takes precedence over ostentatious production value. Graphic elements should enhance the message of the text, not act as page filler and eye candy. Physical books need to be compact, portable, and sturdy. This minimalist aesthetic results in powerful toolkits that are both useful and affordable. After all, roleplaying isn’t the book. It’s the creativity and collaboration that takes place around the tabletop.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
