Into the Odyssey

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Into the Odyssey is a game inspired by the rules of the game Into the Odd written by Chris McDowall. It’s a game about facing your destiny in a world inspired by the mythology of ancient Greece, poems like Iliad and Odyssey by Homer and works of writers like Robert Galasso and Eric R. Dodds. The heroes are Greeks - citizens of Polis who were forced by fate to forsake their previous lives. Great deeds of justice, slain monsters, legendary kingdoms and glory await them.

Game also includes:

  • 36 Occupations
  • Traits, epithets, patron gods and occupations to create a lot of unique combinations of characters for players to use
  • Several charts for the creation of interesting scenarios, places, events, objects and NPC’s for Game Masters
  • A bestiary with some of the most recognizable monsters of the Greek mythology
  • List of magic artifacts inspired by some of the most famous items of the Greek mythology
  • And much more in a compressed and easy to learn form

I haven't tried the game yet, but I want to comment on the name:
Φ is not a letter I; it's a letter Φ (called "phi") in the Greek alphabet. If you want to spell "ΦNTO" using the Latin alphabet, that would be PHNTO.

The same applies to letters in every word on the cover and two more letters just in INTO (ΦΠΤΘ) and they are mixing Greek and Roman alphabets.
ΦΠΤΘ
ΤΗΣ
ΩDΨSSΣΨ
Phonetically they have spelt:
Phpth
ths
Oh-dpssssps
I think of this as the use of Greek letters made famous (but not originated by) the college drama-comedy TV show Greek (GRΣΣΚ, grssk).

Hi.
I’m not familiar with Greek alphabet and I’m aware that font I use in book is some kind of mix and only stylization on Greek alphabet. It was intentional.

I apologize in advance, because I recognize this may not be a fair critique, but as someone who studied Greek...the cover and all the header text make me want to gouge my eyes out. Which is too bad, because at a glance the rest of it is a great resource.

I’m glad you like it ;)
About cover art, I’m aware that there are some art pieces that aren’t very appropriate or exactly matching thematically, but it wasn’t easy to find good open source art to match things I wrote in book. I’m not an expert in Ancient Greek, what exactly about cover art is wrong? I know font is only stylized and it was intentional.

Yes, I'm sorry to be negative. It was a gut reaction. I definitely plan on reading it through! =)
I have no problem with the art! It's literally only the use of all the Greek letters. Some of the other comments mentioned it, but using Greek letters that resemble English letters turns it into gibberish. Just one example from the title: "ΤΗΣ". Σ is a sigma. Even though it looks like an E, it is the Greek S. So writing THΣ is basically the same as THS. I know it's not a big problem. For most people, they won't give it a second thought. But for anyone that knows Greek, it happens so often that it's basically an in-joke among the community.

Like I said though, as hard as the text is for me to read, it's still not a deal-breaker! Despite that, this looks like a great resource.

(and if you ever want to make an updated version, I have a degree in Latin and Greek and I'd be more than happy to lend a hand lol)

No need to apologize. It’s really valuable to hear opinion from people who have different viewpoint on topic. Thanks.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
