The Crystal Wood

A Worlds Without Number Compatible Adventure

The adventure is for 3rd – 5th level characters. The module is written for Worlds Without Number and could be converted to other OSR systems.

The adventure is set up so the Player Characters [PCs] can encounter diverse situations and use different adventure styles, allowing for role-playing within a rural situation, with wandering monsters and a woodland encounter. The module offers a chance for the GM to immerse themselves and their players with as much, or little, detail as they want to put in. Rolling countryside, woods, and small streams surround the local area for many miles, giving you, the GM, the opportunity to fit the adventure into almost any setting within your game. I have left the ending open, allowing the GM to slot in further encounters or adventure twists to keep the game moving but with enough happening to turn it into more than one session if so desired.

The Plot

There are several options for the plot:

1. A local Innkeeper would like you to investigate the disappearances of the foresters and find out what happened to the search party. He suggests you speak to the village priest to look at the body of the returning villager. He is willing to offer a good reward.

2. A local village Elder will ask the PCs to find the missing foresters and villagers. They will then ask the PCs to eliminate the problems plaguing the woods.

3. A local Priest will invite the PCs to view the dead villager’s body and then ask them to investigate the source of the problem.

Hey, I just wanted to ask if this adventure used art made by an Artificial Intelligence like Midjourney. I only ask because the use of AI art is an immediate deal breaker for me as a customer. Also I think DriveThruRPG requires the disclosure of AI art, though I only suspect because others have been adding a disclaimer about their use of AI, but I cannot find any announcement by DriveThruRPG or OneBookSelf about AI art at all. As for why I think AI art was used, the two ants look off to me, especially their legs.

The AI disclosure is only required on stock art assets. The ants are public domain. I have no idea how they were made. It is entirely possible that they are AI.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
