Adventures in Hawk's Rest

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Adventures in Hawk's Rest is a love letter to low-level D&D: Studio Ghibli meets the Shire meets Lost Mine of Phandelver. An open-world hexcrawl for characters of 1st to 2nd level, Hawk's Rest is intended as a prologue to a longer campaign, with seven keyed adventure sites and fantastic maps by Dungeon Baker (How to Defend Your Lair, The Lazy DM's Companion). Hawk's Rest is written for new and veteran players alike but avoids the usual pitfalls associated with 1st-level adventures: not only are encounters balanced to avoid character death, but most combats can be avoided entirely with clever roleplaying.

Roll20 maps are available here: https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/21601/hawks-rest-maps

Hi, this looks like a neat little setting to get a new group started! Concerning the player version of the hexmap that is mentioned to be included at the end of the adventure: It's not there. I can't see it as a separate download file either. Or am I missing something?

Hey Silvia. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you! My bad: the original plan was to put the hexmap at the end, but I ended up moving it to the start of Chapter 6, 'Roaming the Wilds'. It should be on p 19 of the PDF.

Hi Eddy, no worries & thanks for getting back to me! Yes, I saw the map on p. 19, but I was hoping for a player version that doesn't show the adventure sites, like the one in the Roll20 maps :)

Another question, if I may: In the last chapter / conclusion (I love that part, too!) you mention that you might explore the Whispering Woods in a future publication. Is that likely to happen?

Oh I see! For some reason, I can't find the one without the adventure sites, but let me message the cartographer and I'll get back to you!

As for the Whispering Woods: maybe one day! I'm already behind on Paths of the Nexus and would like to do more work on that, but I would love to return to the world of Hawk's Rest :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
