Raiders of the Serpent Sea Campaign Guide (PDF Version)

GLORY IS YOURS FOR THE TAKING!

Centuries ago, upon a vast, beautiful, and wondrous world, a horde of vile beings known as the Yoten destroyed the heroic Vanir. The survivors fled to a new world, Grimnir. Vast and inhospitable, many died in the early years. Yet, it was a place to rebuild.

Generations have passed but the memory of the old world’s death is never forgotten. Their descendants, the raiders, are ever vigilant and watch for the Yoten’s return. You are one such hero destined by fate to bear witness to Grimnir’s destruction–and perhaps fated to finally break your people free of the cycle of destruction and rebirth known as Ragnarök.

From the lead designer of Dragon Age Origins, in partnership with the creators of Odyssey of the Dragonlords, comes Raiders of the Serpent Sea! Take to the seas of Grimnir and battle against the sinister forces of a forgotten past in an epic campaign for the 5th Edition of the world’s greatest roleplaying game! Guide 4-6 players through tumultuous waters as they become heroes across a campaign that will take them from 1st to 16th level.

Raiders of the Serpent Sea is a blend of high fantasy and a darker world of grim seafaring raiders. Grimnir’s clans constantly fight to survive in this doomed world filled with ancient and fantastic creatures - giants, sea serpents, saber-toothed tigers, and the world-devouring Yoten. Nowhere is safe, danger and glory abound!

The Raiders of the Serpent Sea Campaign Guide PDF includes almost 500 pages of epic adventure and supplemental material with full-color maps and illustrations that breathe life into the campaign world.

  • The World of Grimnir. Inspired by Norse mythology and the history of the Vikings, this is a grim and magical land that can be easily connected to existing campaign settings. Includes the world’s origins, major historical events, and describes the raiding clans and the wealthy kingdoms that continually threaten their lands. Learn also about the cursed gods known as the Stone Court, and the power of sacrifice.
  • An Epic Saga. The primary narrative is divided into four main acts across 12 chapters with numerous opportunities for players to build longships, conquer settlements, and even assemble their own clan to stand against their foes at the end of the world.
  • Tracking the Events. Includes diagrams and aids to help the gamemaster stay on top of world events and to track the decisions that the heroes make. These decisions influence the final events at the climax of the campaign.
  • All Backgrounds are Epic. Includes details on how to integrate the six epic backgrounds introduced in the Raiders of the Serpent Sea Player’s Guide into campaign events. These backgrounds create additional motivation for the heroes to explore more of the world.
  • Beware the Hordes! Includes full page illustrations and detailed game statistics and lore for over 25 new creatures inspired by Norse mythology. And there are over 100 new statblocks for NPCs and monsters ranging from low level opponents to higher tier, epic adversaries.
  • Legendary Loot! Over 40 new magic items including Helhelm, the Skithship, and The Horn of the Gods. These items can be discovered by hardy adventurers exploring the world of Grimnir.
  • Raid the Serpent Sea! Expanded naval, sailing, and raiding rules are included to help the game master provide opportunities for players to imagine themselves as Vikings setting forth across dangerous waters.
  • Includes digital files for all maps in the game with gridded and non-gridded versions, as well as a 32-page GM Reference detailing how to adjust the campaign so that it accommodates varying styles of play.

The Raiders of the Serpent Sea Player’s Guide PDF is also available now.

Requires the core 5th Edition rulebooks to play.

Loving the book so far, and my group is having a blast playing through the campaign. However, we do have a question about an ability that my DM is wondering how to resolve. I'm not exactly sure if this is the best place to post this, but I figured I would give it a shot. I've paraphrased his question below:

To get to the point his character is doing extended reach by stacking it to have a 15 foot reach. I am not honestly sure it works like that, but we have seen evidence through google it does, but rambling. The main issue we are trying to figure out is this ability:

Strength Of One: Wild Strength

Class: Path of the Provoked

No enemy is safe when near you. You may sacrifice an attack and transform it into a wild swing that threatens all opponents within 5 feet of you. Any creature within your weapon’s reach must make a Dexterity saving throw against a DC of 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier. If they fail, they take damage as though you hit...See more

Heya... The text for Wild Strength was adjusted during playtesting and now reads:
Wild Strength
No enemy is safe when near you. You may sacrifice an attack and transform it into a wild swing that threatens all opponents nearby. Any opponent within your weapon’s
reach must make a Dexterity saving throw against a DC of 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier. If they fail, they take damage as though you hit them with an attack made with the weapon used.

Hi. My understanding is that it is complete but going through a final review with Roll20. But this is a busy time for them. I'm really hoping it is available by the end of August. (The Fantasy Grounds version was released last week, which I'll make a note of in my next update.)

Brent, first let me say, as I looking over your products, this one & Odyssey of the Dragonlords, I am blow away by the detail & majesty (and love) you are putting into these works. I will be purchasing both & kinda bummed these have flown under my radar. With all that said, I am a completest..... so, any chance we can get a bundle deal on the Roll20 & PDF's? Yes, I'd like to see both projects in bundles if possible. Regardless, I will be picking both up.

John... thanks for the praise. Unfortunately, logistically, we can't bundle Odyssey & Raiders. Long story short: I am in Canada, and the Odyssey folks are in the USA, and we operate financially independently. I had to create my own separate Canadian accounts on Roll20, etc. It gets further complicated in that Modiphius distributes the print versions of both books and the PDFs on DriveThruRPG (i.e., I don't have direct access to the PDFs for the core books here on DriveThru... only the additional PDF-only material I distribute under Runic Tales Inc.)

Please consider making a Foundry VTT realease! Even if it is for future projects, i'm sure there's a lot of people who would enjoy that, since the most part of the community who plays ttrpg online has moved on to Foundry.

Any plans to add this to foundry at all? I see the kickstarter has roll20 and fantasy grounds planned but no mention of foundry vtt.

To Brent Knowles: Are there plans for VTT assets? Namely maps (non-grid please), stat blocks, and NPC/creature tokens. Or — dare I hope — a VTT-ready campaign module? (Foundry VTT for me please.) This will be my next campaign to run after my players and I finish our current game. Though I'm used to converting and recreating everything for online gaming, I'd be thrilled with assets that are ready-to-use.

Hello! The campaign guide includes a zip file with several variations of each map (including non grid versions). A Roll20 compendium & adventure module is under development. And we already have some token frames and example tokens (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/21008/Runic-Tales-Inc?filters=44827_0_0_45317_0) Eventually we will release a token pack for all the new creatures and NPCs.

Thanks for verifying that separate maps are included outside the campaign guide. The product description doesn't mention any assets for VTT so the prudent assumption is that there aren't any. I'm glad there are. And I did discover the token frames by Runic Tales, so I'm happy about that. Looking forward to the compendium, adventure module, and token pack. What's the best way to keep abreast on those items?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
