The Lovecraft Variant

A piece of role playing history!

The ORIGINAL Lovecraftian RPG.

A 60+ page booklet with everything you need to turn Monsters! Monsters! (or any other compatible rules set) into a full Lovecraftian system – featuring new classes, skills, character traits, weapons, monsters and much more!

In 1980 the Rahman brothers released a set of rules to convert the second oldest role playing game in the world to a Lovecraftian setting – not just a set of loosely inspired monsters, but a full system for investigating strange occurrences and uncovering ancient secrets, all while struggling to maintain the characters' sanity in the face of unimaginable terrors.

This book consists of:

The Lovecraft Variant – first published in Sorcerer’s Apprentice No 7 – Summer 1980.

A bevy of rules to recreate HP Lovecraft’s mythos in RPG games.

Know Your Foe: The Monsters of the Cthulhu Mythos – first published in Sorcerer’s Apprentice No 7 – Summer 1981. A system agnostic essay on including Lovecraftian monsters and gods in your games.

You will need a copy of the Monsters! Monsters! Core rules (or a compatible system) to use this book.

These rules are published under licence by Bolt Thrower Press.

Hi Tom, thanks for the offer of an easier-to-read version! I didn't reply to the discussion earlier because I hadn't seen the notification.

I see you've updated the product to include the easy-to-read version now, thanks so much!

This is amazing but I really wish the fonts were more normal, this font is super hard to read. Would you consider doing an edition with a more readable font?

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with the font. I actually went through at least a dozen different fonts to find what I considered the most legible, whilst still being inkeeping with the period this is from. I actually find this font very easy to read, but obviously these things vary massively from person to person. Unfortunately at the moment I can't really justify redoing the book with a different font, as this would be a big outlay in time in terms of the layout.

I have to agree with Edward H here: I like your layouts & I can understand why you chose the font for the period this is from. But that font is causing me an extreme amount of eyestrain when I try to read it. It is painfully aggravating & I am unable to read much of it without it triggering a migraine for me. It's that bad for me.

That is not to say that this book's font will be illegible for everybody. But it will probably cause severe eyestrain & headaches for anybody who has any vision issues or visually sensitive conditions such as migraines, etc. That still means a lot of people will have difficulty with it.

I think it would be great if you could produce even just a simple art-free version of this book with a plain font, & include it as a second version that purchasers can download.

That way, we could either admire your layouts & fonts the way that they are meant to be seen, or read the book more easily. It would be inclusive for all of us.

P.S. The problematic font that has been used here also makes me wonder if people were just generally more used to reading such unclear fonts, crowded line-spacing, & etc back in the day. Layout styles, fonts, & printing methods have just changed so much over the years.

Anyway, those days were a long time ago. But I still fondly remember when this material first appeared in a couple of issues Sorcerer's Apprentice magazine.

Those Lovecraft articles were my most favourite articles of all to ever appear in that magazine.

So even if the font is problematic for some of us here now, I still appreciate all of the care that you took to rescue that material from time & to preserve it here. It is good to see it again.

Could these rules be used to run a Lovecraftian game of Mercenaries, Spies & Private Eyes?

Yes, M!M! is a T&T variant, but the two sets are now published by different people (in fact M!M! is published by a couple of the old T&T team, including the author, Ken St Andre.)

These rules will work with M!M!, T&T or MSPE.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
