Mythic Game Master Emulator Second Edition

Play any role-playing game solo or without a Game Master!

Mythic's oracle-style question resolution system revolutionized solo role-playing. The Second Edition of the Mythic Game Master Emulator updates the ground-breaking 2003 ruleset with essential new additions, a wide range of options to customize your adventures, and numerous refinements.

Mythic Game Master Emulator Second Edition can be used with any role-playing system to replace the Game Master, or played on its own without another RPG.

This new edition contains:

  • A revised and simplified Fate Chart for faster and more intuitive Fate Question resolution.
  • The new Fate Check system, receive answers without a chart.
  • Numerous rules refinements and enhancements taking into account two decades worth of Mythic player experiences.
  • Many options for fine-tuning Mythic to get the kind of role-playing experience you want.
  • 47 Meaning Tables to add just the right detail to your adventures when you need it.

The book is designed to be accessible to new players while also offering current players an updated and richer Mythic experience.

How does it work?
Mythic emulates a Game Master by using a few key concepts:

  • A Yes/No question and answer mechanic.
  • Random Events that add surprises.
  • Meaning Tables that offer inspirational prompts for important details.
  • Lists tracking important goals and characters which are randomly selected when called for.
  • Scene structure to give your adventure form and order.
  • A Chaos Factor that changes the tempo of the adventure as you play.

Everything is guided by your expectations and interpretations based on the ongoing Context. This makes sure the adventure continues in a coherent fashion while still allowing for twists and subversions that keep things exciting.

What's changed in this edition?
While the rules have been completely rewritten most of the core concepts of Mythic remain while much has been added or refined. Here is a summary of the biggest changes:

  • THE FATE CHART: Odds have been slightly simplified and some of their titles changed to give a more intuitive feel. The table itself has been redesigned to also make it more intuitive.
  • THE FATE CHECK: Answer Questions without the chart. This version has been updated from Mythic Variations II to make it feel more like the Fate Chart.
  • CHOICES: Mythic GME Second Edition gives more power to Player choices.
  • LISTS: List management is more dynamic.
  • ELEMENTS MEANING TABLES: In addition to the Actions and Descriptions Meaning Tables there are 45 Elements Meaning Tables that are more specifically themed. This gives you the option to choose a Meaning Table that is most relevant to the current Context.
  • OPTIONS: There are a lot of options throughout Second Edition, more ways for you to customize your Mythic experience to get the kind of game you want.
  • REFINEMENTS: This edition contains numerous changes and refinements to make Mythic play smoother and more dynamic.

Happy adventuring! :)

PDF Options: This PDF file contains layers, allowing you to make the file more printer friendly. In Layers navigation of your PDF reader you can uncheck the "Artwork, color" layer to make all the artwork black-and-white. You can also uncheck "Border" to remove the top and bottom border graphics and uncheck "Header & Page Number" to remove those elements as well.

Is it still accurate to say as of now that the PDF version is superior to the printed one (hardcover, standard color)?

The premium color paper is smoother than the standard paper and the color is a bit crisper. The standard paper has a bit of texture to it and may warp a bit more than premium.

I would say it's most similar to the DTRPG premium hard cover.

What is this product in relation to the Mythic Role Playing (red book)? Is one a stripped down part of the other, or do they compliment each other some how? From what I am reading, they both accomplish the same end result, except the red book looks like it's more focused on solo play, while this one seems more balanced between solo and GM-less group play, but I'm not sure.

The Mythic RPG red book is the original, 2003, Mythic book. That book contains the original Game Master Emulator rules as well as rules for a full RPG (character creation, combat, etc.). The 2006 Mythic Game Master Emulator are just the GME rules from the original red book without the RPG rules. This edition here is the 2023 second edition of Mythic Game Master Emulator, which again focuses only on the GM emulation rules for solo play.

I have already bought the 2e PDF, it's great, thank you. I'm looking to pickup a printed copy too but can't find a description anywhere of the difference between "Standard" and "Premium" softcover books? Can anyone advise me?

Also intrigued by what format other folk prefer. Even though hardcovers are more expensive and thought of as next level quality I've always preferred softcover editions as I find them easy to flick through when looking for a particular section in the book. Of course I like to be able to lay books flat but neither softcover nor hardcover really allow this unless they're ring-bound which I assume none of the options here are?

Hi Carl :)

In my opinion, the standard paper is a bit rougher feeling than the premium. Standard has a little bit of texture to it while premium feels smoother. The color in Premium is a bit more vibrant too, although I would say the color in standard feels darker and a bit more saturated, so opinions may vary on which has the better color.

As far as softcover versus hardcover, as you indicate this is really a personal preference. I think on a practical point, hardcover is more likely to remain open when you are in the middle sections of the book as the weight of the paper helps keep the book open and the hard cover binding is less likely to contract at that point.

I hope this helps!

Okay, I have a bit of a problem. I'm going away for a couple of weeks. I want to take the PDF version with me but it doesn't make sense to buy the PDF version now and then the premium softcover later later ($12.71+$54.95 vs $57), is there a way to delay delivery of the physical copy for when I get back?

You may have to check directly with DTRPG about that. I know it takes a few weeks for printed books to be printed and delivered. You can also choose from several delivery options, I believe, so you could select the slowest delivery to give a little extra time. I'm not sure if there is a way to select a specific delivery day or to purposefully delay the delivery.

I'd bought GME via Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mythic-Master-Emulator-revised-Playing/dp/B0B65FYC71/ref=sr_1_2) before I found out about DriveThruRPG. It tells me that it's the "2021 edition" which appears to be a print on demand from Amazon and the cover is different to the 2nd edition cover shown here. My cover is plain blue with Mythic in black and the rest of the text in white. Can anyone tell whether what I have is the 2nd ed or Amazon messing me about?

Hi Matt :)

That Amazon 2021 edition you mention is a revised version of the original, first edition book. The artwork was revised. Second edition MGME is a different book.

Is supplemental material such as The Adventure Crafter, The Location Crafter, Variations 1 & 2, the magazines and other related books still relevant to GME2E or has most of that been included? I was curious to get those next, but I don't know if they would work for this new edition or if most of what's in them is already included in this book.

Hi James :)

All of my rules are modular, plug in what you like and remove what you don't like, so all my content is still compatible with each other. MGME2E does include a lot of material from the Mythic Magazines that came before it ... I'd say maybe 40% of the material in those issues. Most of the rules brought forward from the magazine have seen some alterations or simplification. It also incorporates some refreshed ideas from Mythic Variations I and II, in particular Complex Questions and the Fate Check.

It doesn't include any part of The Adventure Crafter other than some new guidance in how to use it with Mythic and it doesn't include the Location Crafter.

I hope this helps :)

Hi. Thanks for the awesomeness.
Is the second edition compatible with all the great stuff from the magazines. I don't want to switch to the second edition if I need to "translate" between first edition supplements and second edition revised and simplified core rules.

Hi Miskatonic :)

Yes, second edition is compatible with the magazine content. Pretty much all my rulesets are modular, in the sense that you can plug in or leave out bits as you choose. So, you could use 2nd edition rules, swap in items from magazines, and swap out stuff you may have liked better in first edition, and everything would work fine. MGME2E is a refinement of the original, not a completely new ruleset, so there should be few compatibility issues.

The 2nd edition book uses a lot of material from the Mythic Magazines that were published before it. So if you're familiar with the magazine you'll recognize a lot of that content, although some of it has been changed/updated/simplified.

So it's tough to schedule things in my friend group for our TTRPG romps, and only one of them is really ever available consistently nowadays. We use FATE Core for our adventures, which tends to lend better to more than 1 PC, and I've been trying to figure out a way to do a 1 player 1 DM campaign with my more active friend on the side, or even shed my role as DM to make it 2 players. Does Mythic have the capability to work with FATE Core, either keeping most of the FATE rules or even letting Mythic do some heavy lifting here and there at my discretion? This sort of roleplaying system is a pretty new concept to me.

Hey James,
Mythic is system agnostic. I am also using fate core for my solo play adventures and I think it is ideal as it is easy to setup new NPCs and challenges that come up during play.

Hi. Brief question: I really enjoy the RPG system of the first edition, I can pretty much adapt published adventures into that format and not have to learn umpteen new different systems to enjoy the adventure.

I kinda immediately noticed the lack of "resisted questions" in this edition. So I suppose that if I want to play it with resisted questions and using Mythic as the actual RPG engine, I have to use the Fate Chart from the 1st edition. But it's been improved and adjusted on the 2nd edition, so I worry about missing a more balanced chart. What are the recommendations for someone trying to use the 1st Edition RPG system with the 2nd Edition Fate Chart (and all of the other things that the 2nd Edition brings)?

Hiya. Two questions I was hoping you could answer:

1) I noticed discussion in early March of a v2 update that includes some errata, but the 'file last updated' is early Feb. Is that Feb update one and the same as the v2?

2) Is there likely to be another update with more errata in the near future? I'd like to get a premium hardcover, but would like to hold off if new errata will be rolled out soon.

Cheers!

Hi Jarrad :)

I'm not sure about the March discussion, but the current version of the PDF and print files contain corrected errata (that was the main reason for the delay between the PDF being published and the POD versions appearing, I had to update the POD with fixes before making them live). I don't have plans for another update.

Happy adventuring :)

Hi Tana, one question before jumping into the book. Does this rules set consider a solo option using an already writen aventure? Specially if I want to stay relatively not closet but at least near the original adventure?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Alejandro :)

Yes, there is a section of the book devoted to rules and suggestions for using prepared, published adventures in solo Mythic play. The approach is to keep the flavor of the adventure and the content, but allow Mythic to introduce surprises and to change the adventure as you go. This way you get a balance of experiencing the adventure as its author intended but advance spoiler knowledge is kept at a minimum because you don't know ahead of time which of those elements will actually make it into your adventure, what Mythic will add, or what will change as you play.

I dont understand why I have to ask for permission to visa every time I purchase something in Drivethru. So, this time I tried and immediatly got it from Itch.io
And I must say, I absolutely love it. To mention a few things... The way you write is extremely clear and makes it a pleasure to read. And the many examples you state makes of this rules set an example of how something should be written.
Thank you very much for your effort and for sharing with us such an excellent job.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
