Freedom of expression and human creativity are important. Some of us believe that sacrifices and fearless examples should be made so that others are inspired to protect these sacred manifestations of the human spirit.

Those who seek to unfairly profit from our work, or to threaten innocent and law-abiding people, should not be allowed to stifle the human spirit in any way.

This free rules set (set to Pay What You Want) is provided as an example of the author’s personal expression of fundamental game mechanics for a fantasy role-playing game.

The information within this tome does not belong to any tyrannical profit-seeking corporation, and never will. I hope that you find my expression of ideas useful, and potentially inspiring toward the future development of your own gaming creations.

Thanks Ronald, enjoy. I wanted to make sure that people understood that they can not only make their own game materials outside of others' control, they can make their own art too, or use my examples.

Would you consider licensing this under a known license like the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License?

This accomplishes more or less the same thing as your informal "license" on Page 6, while feeling a lot less nebulous. If the goal is for this to serve as the basis of future OSR games, I'd feel a lot better using your terminology in my products if I knew I couldn't be sued by you.

Don't get me wrong - I'm sure your heart is in the right place now, but when your grandson inherits your copyright, I want to know any products I make that use mechanics derived from The Oldskull Manifesto can't have the rug pulled out from under them. After all, this is basically what happened with the OGL 1.1, and it would suck to have the rug pulled out from under us again.

Hi there Roberto, thanks for downloading. :) The Oldskull Manifesto is not a rules system; a manifesto is a public statement of beliefs that the author feels should be considered to move human sentiment and fairness in a specific direction with justifications given. So it's more of a "teach a man to fish" guide, showing that it is possible to establish game concepts in such a way that they are coherent, resonant with what people are currently playing, and outside of corporate control.

As stated, it's more of a demonstration of how I can present things to avoid litigation rather than a full compendium of details. In reacting to what I write people will agree with parts and disagree with parts, and in disagreeing they have an impetus to create their own interpretations, which is a way to show people how to write their own unique expressions of the form. In the future, I can make the full Oldskull Saga Rules game system, and could make a CC4 version if that's what people want. What might be...See more

Hi Alex, thank you! I'm glad you like it. I've just released Manifesto Book II today, which more deeply explores the concept of original derivations for monsters, specifically Orcs and Beowulf.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
