Scion: Boon Companions

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Think of Hades and you think of his three-headed hound. Imagine Odin and you see his ravens, Chang’e and her rabbit. Beloved animals have been the companions and symbols of Gods and heroes since the dawn of time, and they swoop, pad, and crawl alongside Scions in the modern World. A companion creature can be anything from a fierce ally in battle to a balm for the soul, but it can’t be everything at once.

Scion: Boon Companions is a new Birthright designed for use with Scion: Origin Second Edition and Scion: Hero Second Edition.

This PDF is part of the “Storypath Tasty Bits” program, where every month in 2022 Onyx Path offers a small product that ties into one of its Storypath games.

Also available now from Onyx Path Publishing:

Saints & MonstersScion Second Edition Player's Guide: Saints & Monsters

Discover what lurks in the hidden corners of myth.

There is more to The World than the children of the Gods — more than Heroes and Demigods. Legends speak of stranger things; of mortals who challenge the very Gods themselves, or who see Fate’s invisible workings laid bare; of creatures of every kith and kind who still dwell, here and there, alongside humanity; of sorcerers who tamper with things they should not, tempting the ire of the Gods with their hubris; and of the children of the Titans, whose inhuman ichor burns away at their very humanity.

What tales will you tell of such wonders?

Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero are required to use this book, although Scion: Demigod and Mysteries of the World are useful additions.

Scion Player’s Guide — Saints & Monsters contains:

  • Two new Callings: Outsider and Shepherd!
  • Expanded rules for playing Saints, Prophets, and Denizens!
  • Full rules for playing Sorcerers and Titanic Scions!
  • Edges, a new character creation system, and new takes on the Storypath system!

Couldn't find an errata link but 1) the Steed Role appears to be is missing, might be easier to just remove the mention of it as a role in the introductory section.
2) While the boon companion fatebind does normally lose 1 strength from resolving the imperiled condition of it's compel, mimicking that with this birthright devours 5 of your experience permanently, which is a drastical more punishing result and seems opposite to how Scion has treated losing birthrights in recent works (including this very book having your xp refunded when you Part Ways with a Companion).

Does anyone know if this product clarifies some of the issues with Creature Birthrights, such as defense values and health levels? Or present a reason or reward to take a sandbag if it is thematically appropriate to the creature? Or provide creature ratings to any of the already presented stats from Origin/Hero?

It is a separate birthright that acts immensely similarly to Creature birthrights, so could sorta be seen as an errata for Creature. It has health/defence/initiative values and dicepools for primary/secondary/desperate rather than just primary, though they are different to Creature ones. There is no benefits mentioned for applying weaknesses to a Companion. There are some example Companions that seem to follow the rules presented, rather than giving dot ratings to existing creatures.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
