Pan, His Majesty in Yellow (OSE)

Pan, His Majesty in Yellow is a fairy tale cosmic horror sandbox campaign setting that combines the lore of Peter Pan, Hastur, Neverland, and Carcosa into a strange and unique experience.

This version is designed for use with Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy, and is therefore compatible with the BX edition of the world's most popular roleplaying game—as well as most OSR games and retroclones.

Dimensions are US Letter (8.5" x 11").

Physical copies of the book (hardcover, smyth-sewn, with yellow ribbon bookmark) can be found from Ability Score Games, Exalted Funeral, Third Kingdom Games, and others. We have been working with DTRPG to get softcover print-on-demand books underway, but keep running into hiccups with their printers.

Praise for Pan, His Majesty in Yellow:

"It expands on the genre [...] and then mashes the entire thing up with some Hastur/Carcosa s***. Which, kind of makes perfect sense. There’s the usual stuff, with a new pirate in town, the faeries, the lost boys and so on. And then there’s a Carcosa-like dream city full of nightmares from beyond that melts in. There’s a continual theme of Pans capriciousness, and the consequences of it. There were Wendy’s before Wendy and Wendy’s after Wendy. What becomes of them? Hence The Old Ladies, appearing in the adventure. Other items are expanded upon as well. And almost everything has this slightly dark twist to it. What appears to be the frivolity of Peter Pan and the environment has dark undertones and origins. And it all works out pretty good, as a theme. It’s not my thing, but it brings the weird … never in your face but hiding as origin stories and in deep dark caves."

Bryce Lynch (Ten Foot Pole blog)

"[Pan, His Majesty in Yellow] is a unique book. The flavorful atmosphere, mixing Barrie’s original work with Greek mythology and Ambrose’s Carcosa is so cool that I would still recommend the book even if there were not stats for the Denizens."

"It’s a rare delight when I get to check out a tabletop game setting that this fervently ignites the occult and esoteric side of my brain."

—Charles R. Bernard (Wandering Monster)

“It really truly looks beautiful … There's just a lot of cool things going on!”

Interview with the author, Wayne Robert, by Dave Townsend of Games with Dave:

Back Cover

Pan, His Majesty in Yellow contains a mixture of original art, stock art, AI-generated art (all of which was heavily edited in Photoshop by a human artist), public domain art (much of which was edited in Photoshop), and map assets by both an RPG cartographer (2-Minute Tabletop) and created using INKARNATE and Photoshop. Please note, the choice to use machine-learning-assisted art in this project was done to create a jarring, surreal, and dreamlike quality—much as our subconscious minds filter and process information by deconstructing and recombining information in our dreams when we sleep, utilizing AI art explicitly for this purpose was an intentional decision. Wyrd Valley Press will never use unmodified AI art in our products and, moving forward, until the laws are clearer and better defined to protect living artists from the many AI programs using their art to train on without their permission, WVP will not use AI-generated art in any future project after this one.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy of Pan, His Majesty In Yellow from the first printing, even after having missed the kickstarter deadline. Written by Wayne Robert, I was excited to pick it up because the fantasy work of J.M. Ba [...]

Pan, His Majesty In Yellow (PMIY) is a beautiful hexcrawl for Old School Essentials. After a brief introduction (and a poem!), the book opens with a nice “Once upon a time…” section devoted to the weird and mysterious life (and death) of H [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
